I just gave my daughter my 2005 Prius with Extended Warranty. Now I have to buy a replacement for me and I am looking at 2006 to 2008 Prius's. I understand from what is being posted at this site that I would need to buy a Prius within the milage (36k) and time (3 yrs (from when?)) limits in order to be eligible for the EW. What about ownership? If I buy from the original owner, can I get the EW? If I buy from the second owner, can I? If I buy from a used car dealer, can I?
And finally, if I buy a Texas sold and registered Prius, can I get the EW after registering it here in California?
    Thanks,
    Roger

    Hi Roger,

The answer to every question above is 'Yes'. All that matters is that the car is within the original 3 yr / 36,000 mile factory warranty period. It doesn't make any difference if you purchased the car new, used, certified, etc... And it doesn't make any differnce where the car comes from as long as it was originally a U.S. vehicle. (or possibly Canadian, but that's whole other discussion).

The 3 year time period starts effective from what Toyota terms the 'Date of First Use'. Which is normally the original date of sale from when the car was first sold. To verify that date for sure, a Toyota dealer would have to run the VIN and check it for you. Although, you should be able to get pretty close by running a CarFax.

Thanks for the answers. Here are a few more questions:

Is it part of the procedure for buying an extended warranty on a used Prius that I am planning to buy, to have the car inspected by a Toyota dealer? Should I expect to pay for this? How much?

If a Prius has a title that is Salvage or Rebuilt, its not eligible for EW, right? What is the most economical way to find out in advance whether this is the case? (I spent $30 yesterday on a Carfax report and found out that even though the seller's copy of his title was marked "Only For Export," it also turns out that the title was branded Salvage/Rebuilt.)

Does a Salvage title terminate every one of the different levels of Warranty that Toyota puts on a Prius from the beginning? Is there any kind of third-party warranty worth buying that would cover a Salvage Prius?

When I find an eligible Prius for a EW, what's the best way to get a quote etc for that?

    Thanks,

    Roger

I know that a salvage title voids all Toyota warranties, you'd be on your own. Any Toyota dealer should be able to enter the VIN and tell you if the car is still under warranty. For an aftermarket warranty, you might try Warrantydirect - I'm not sure if they'd cover it or not.

I just picked up my 2010 prius tonight and i guess i havent done my homework when it came to the "toyota extended care" in the finance office, the sales guys sold me on the prepaid maintenence for $1295 and extended care for $1895. Both i know i paid way too much. He said that if i bought both of these he would lower my APR. So my question is, as i read in previous post, i can cancel the extended care and prepaid maintenence right? Would they raise my APR (Loan through Toyota)? Or can i call him to lower the price as to some that have paid on this website?

    Any help is greatly appreciated..

    thanks again!

lisalisa, you can go back to the dealer and demand that they remove the warranty. you can get the warranty ANYTIME BEFORE 3 year, OR 36,000. they have to reimburse you.

This sounds too good to be true! I haven't bought my Prius yet. You are saying I can get the SAME extended warranty and pre-paid oil changes etc. for about $1900? Is that really really true? My dealer wants $3400!

One note for those considering waiting until later in the initial 3 year warranty period to buy the extended warranty: the extended warranty's effective date is the date the vehicle was placed in service, NOT the date you buy the extended warranty.

Should the extended warranty from Toyota show up in my owners online account?

I just picked up my 2010 and I'm considering getting getting an extended service contract. I'm in FL (part of SE Toyota Distributors) and the local dealer is pushing a "Liberty Protection Plan": 5yr/100K w/ $100 deductible for $1363.

When I tried to get a quote from Toyota Financial it said my state (FL) didn't qualify. Will SE Toyota Dealers accept the Toyota Extended Warranty discussed here? Or am I excluded because I'm stuck the SE Toyota Mafia?

    Thanks-

Hi - I'm a new forum user who is planning to purchase a 2008 Prius within the next day or two. Unfortunately it will be out of the original warranty period (49k miles). I understand from reading this thread that WarrantyShack/Troy (or is it Toyota in general?) cannot provide an extended warranty in this case.

The place I'm buying from is offering a 7yr/100k mile warranty for $2060, and I was wondering:

    1) Is this likely to be a third-party company and not a Toyota warranty? I haven't been quite clear on this from the reading I've done here so far. Can Toyota provide a warranty on a car I buy from another dealer? Or does it have to be a third-party company?

    2) Is this a decent price for this warranty for a car past the 36K mark? Or is it a rip-off? It certainly seems like a huge cost (almost 2x) compared to the deal here. But maybe that's a regular, expected increase once you're out of the original warranty period?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm really looking forward to getting my Prius, and to learning and interacting with your forums here!

    Yes.

To quote Troy from above (the guy from Toyota of Greenfield who sells the discounted extended warranty):

I have the extended warranty, but I converted my Prius to run on ethanol, and now I'm getting it converted to a PHEV. So... with only 8k miles on it now, AND the fact that if something went wrong they will probably fight me on it, should I just ditch the extended warranty and get my thousand dollars back?

I presume that if you had a computer-type of problem or electric motor (like a power window or a water pump), it would still be covered. I would consider keeping the warranty to see how the 2010's hold up over a couple of years.

Allright, I'll take your advice. :) I was thinking the same thing... that's true we don't know how the 2010 components will hold up yet, or if there are any bugs. It's not a huge amount of money, I got them to match the PC offer. (I just told them I had an offer from someone else.)

OK so I just read thru a lot of this forum and I still don't know if the plans offered by Troy Dietrich is a deal or not. Isn't he just some car insurance saleman trying to sell me a plan that may not be legitimate in a couple of years. Is my local dealer going to honor this plan? How can we trust him?

You couldn't have read much of this thread. The plan he offers is the same as a lot of the dealers offer. It is honored at all the dealerships. Better to ask rather than have anxiety about it though. If nothing else, tell your dealer you had an offer elsewhere and give them an opportunity to match it. 9 out of 10 times they will.

    :)
