One thing not covered in this topic is buying a used Prius from a dealer. One say with 10 or 20K miles on the car. The dealers can offer the same extended warrentee as with a new car. This is only available when the car is purchased from the dealer and the same coverage can not be offere here or by anyone else. There are after market coverages but when buying used there is the advantage of buying the extended warentee directly from the dealer. Of course having read this topic, you should be able to talk them down to a reasonable price (1000 to 1300). One question to always ask on a used car is whether or not the car originally had the extended warentee. I believe if it did, then it should be transferable to you.

 

GeeWiz, I beg to differ. This has been covered in earlier posts. And I DID by the same coverage here as a new car and my Prius had 9k mi. on it when i bought it. No difference in coverage and the same good low price. I'm sure Troy will tell you so when he sees this.

Paprius4030 is right. Thats exactly what we ARE offering, since I am a Toyota dealer I can sell the Toyota factory backed new vehicle Extra Care plans on any Toyota, as long as it meets the eligibility requirements of being less than 36 months from the in-service date, and under 36,000 miles.

The only plans I can't offer are the used and certified vehicle plans, which generally give less coverage for more money than the new vehicle plans. Those can only be offered by the selling dealer, but the only time you would want to consider them, is if the car was not eligible for a new vehicle plan.

I guess I've missed something. I bought 2 weeks ago a 2004 Prius with 19200 miles from a dealer. It is Toyota Certified, and I got what i thought was a good deal on 12000 for a 'new' 6yr/100Kmiles bumper to bumper warentee. I did this because I thought I saw that this deal did not cover buying a used car. What you are saying is because it's a 2004, it's within the 36mths and qualifies for the new plan ?

 

Correct. Your Prius does qualify for a new vehicle plan, although I suspect you actually purchased a Platinum Certified plan since the terms you mentioned (6/100K) are what the certified plans are for.

Also, I should note, since the Platinum certified plan picks up where the regular certified powertrain warranty leaves off, you will still have the $50 deductible on powertrain items that are part of the initial certified warranty. Whereas, if you purchase the new vehicle Platinum, there would be no deductible on those powertrain items.

Or it could be worse...since you haven't said specifically what you purchased...bumper to bumper doesn't tell me much, its a term that shouldn't be used since it implies that every single part on that car is covered, and especially since the bumpers themselves are not covered by any Toyota Extra Care plan. if you purchased the Gold Certified plan, then most of the expensive high tech parts on a Prius wouldn't be covered at all by it, and there is a $50 deductible on all claims.

Hello Troy,

I called the number on the back of the service agreement and via the phone menu I was given instructions to send in my original copies of the agreement in order to cancel by mail. I'll make copies of everything, but I assume this is straightforward once Toyota receives the paperwork?

I hate sending originals. I'll keep scans of them, of course.

I just found your site and realized I got ripped off for the extended warranty too. I bought the 7 year 75k for $1700.00. The agreement states you can cancel it within 60 days for a new car and 30 days for a used vehicle. I called Toyota Financial and verified it. Thanks for efforts in obtaining this discount and maintaining this excellent site.

Hello, I bought the premium prepaid maintence program on January 11, 2005 for $995, I sure wish I would have seen the post that i could have bought the same thing for $670. Would it be possible to cancel my policy now or is it too late. It has been more than 30 days. Thank You for your help.

I just checked my paperwork here is what it says; (Btw, I bought the car 2/13/05)
Toyota Certified Platinum with 0$ deductible. It says plan Term 72 months 100,000 miles, but also says Expires 4/07/2010 or 100,000 miles. 72 months should have been 2/13/2011 right ? I paid $1,300 for this agreement and I still have time to cancel it.
On the financial contract it lists 'Western National Warranty' as the MBP company. Boy do I hate getting rooked.

Bernal, It can still be cancelled but it wouldn't be a 100% refund since you are past the inital 30 days. I would estimate that you would get back about $850.00 if you were to cancel it now. You can call Toyota Financial at (800) 228-8559 for details on how to cancel it and for a more accurate refund quote...but my estimate is going to be real close.

Geewiz, the expiration date of the Certified Platinum is 72 months from the original in-service date, not the date you purchased the car or the plan. So I would guess that date is correct. I don't know why your finance contract would say "Western National Warranty", it should state either TMIS (Toyota Motor Insurance Services) or Toyota Financial Services.

It lists "Western National Warranty" under the Optional Mechanical Breakdown Protection ("MBP") on the financial services agreement. Doing a google of the guys does not instill confidence.

The 'Toyota Certified Platinum' and 72mth/100K is listed on a white 'Toyota Extra Care' Washington Vehicle Service Agreement. (though it has no 'Certification No.'). But back to my origianal question. Are you saying that you can offer this same (or better) plan on this car for less ?

 

Great job Danny and Troy, but has anyone heard of any similar good deal stories for north of the border? Any dealers interested in being a northern "Troy"?

Troy, As I mentioned in the e-mail to you, I canceled the 5/100/50 warranty I signed up for when I bought my Prii ($1,550). The check for the deal you are offering goes in the mail today. Thanks for supporting PriusChat and offering a fair deal on warranty.

I purchased the Platinum 6 year, 100000 mile warranty for $1450 when I bought my Prius because the salesperson told me he was giving it to me at cost. When I saw this thread I told my dealership that I found a better deal and wanted to cancel. They persisted in telling me that the price they gave me was their cost for the warranty, and pressed me to tell them where I was getting such a good deal from (but I had already read Troy's post and wouldn't give up the information). Anyway, it took a while for the cancellation paperwork to go through, but I got my confirmation about a week ago and mailed in my order to Troy the same day.

A very big thank you to Troy at Greenfield Toyota, and of course, to PriusChat! I contacted Troy, canceled the other warranty I had purchased through the dealer and just recently received the paperwork on Troy's much better offer! The whole process was as easy as could be, and Troy is great to deal with. It's this PriusChat community and its terrific people that make the Prius an even greater car than it already is!

Well, I just picked up my 2005 Driftwood Pearl, Package #4 Prius last nite and it is now about 12 hours old. I was glad I asked for more time to think about the great "deal" the dealership offered me for the extended warranty (7/100K Platinum for $1350 offered "ONLY during time of purchase"). I had thought about stopping by after work today to buy it. Luckily for me, I found this thread just in time! LOL

I had thought about printing out this thread and showing the dealer as an "in your face" gesture but then I read Troy's post and figured that might not be a good idea. I would have gotten great satisfaction out of it tho. Even tho the salesman and service were originally great, I found when the car came in that salespeople really don't like it when you know more than they do. ESPECIALLY when you're a woman. ARGH. Anyways, that's another post. Thanks Troy and Danny.
