I think the jist of his article is that regular gasoline powered cars should be on the way out. With Hybrids and the newer designed diesel engines being more fuel efficient and cleaner burning, the old gas engines need to find the door and don't let the doorknob hit you in the nice person on the way out.

What is the conversion from l/k to m/g?

    235.21/(L/100km) = mpg

    235.21/mpg = L/100km

(the decimal point is effy since someone on PC came up with a different value after the decimal but it's close enough. 235.21/50 = 4.7L/100km)

OK, So in the article his Prius is getting roughly 44 MPG, and the Pigeon, or whatever it was, is getting 39 MPG. Sounds right on par for the Jetta/Prius comparisons here.

To the detractors to my OP - I made my comment in the sub-heading - I felt that it was, considering all the usual rubbish one sees from the hardcore auto press, a breath of fresh air. It was also one of those articles that really do not benefit from a summary or an extract, although I have to say that Pat certainly did a great job of this. Also, it was nice to see something from the mainstream auto press that actually compared like with like and attempted to dispell most of the inaccuracies that we seem to constantly face from non-enthusiasts.

When I posted the item, I had completely forgotten his complaints about the battery. There are a lot of threads around that disprove his general comments in this area, plus the fact that his main problem was more with a specific car than the model itself.
