I know my name isn't Dianne, but I got a lot of training videos on iTunes for my Wife's Venza. Seems to take a while for them to show up after the car is being sold but I searched in podcasts.

    Dianne,

One post indicated that the Salesperson had just received their Sales Training for the PIP. I was wondering what kind of training Toyota provided the dealers to get up to speed and if it's something we could see.

I'm going with regular mail. I think they are probably getting a bunch of these applications now, and maybe one or two clerks will be going through them. Thanks to Dianne, we can shave at least a couple of weeks off the usual time it would take.:p

Yeah, 'cause it must take those bureaucrats three or four hours to put a sticker in an envelope.

I've had really good service from the folks at the CA DMV -- even after the cut-backs, furloughs, etc.

Hi Dianne, I'm also curious about when the service departments receive their training for the PiP. Do you have any idea when this training was rolled out? I'm just wondering how much earlier the service training occurred prior to when the vehicles arrive in the dealerships...thanks!

First unofficial meeting this morning at Donut Queen of the unofficial PiP owner's of Simi Valley, including SimiPrius, UCBruins, H20Skier and rogerv. (Dave, Joseph, Ken, Roger) We also had in attendance Joseph's friend George, who brought the first Prius C any of us had seen. Had two Advanced and one basic. We plan to get together again when Ken finally gets his basic, which is now somewhere in the Pacific. It was interesting comparing notes and getting to know each other. Dianne gets high marks from all the PiP buyers.:) Unfortunately for George, he bought his elsewhere.

    Re: License Plates!

So in CA, you don't need the plates on the car to drive it from the dealer? In NY you do.

You get a temporary registration that is taped inside the windshield or rear window, in order to drive until the plates and permanent registration come to you. Is NY one of the states that assigns the plates to the owner, rather than the car? In other words, you move your old plate to the new car at the time of delivery?

In Minnesota you do not need a license plate to drive it away from the dealer's lot.

Dianne told me that if the car is being shipped, you don't need to register in Ca. However, if you drive it yourself to another state, it has to be registered in Ca first, then transferred to its new home state.

So does that mean that you pay the California sales tax? I was expecting to pay the sales tax when I registered the car in Texas. I hope I am not going to get double tax when I take delivery of the car. If it has to be registered in California first, does that mean I am eligible to get the green stickers?

Generally in CA you pay sales tax based on your city of residence. I remember working retail many moons ago and if someone proved that they lived in Oregon, for example, we were supposed to override the tax in the system to 0 because they did not need to pay it. In addition, when buying a car in a county with different sales tax rate, you pay the tax based on your home county.

As far as the plates - we drive around with paper dealer plates for a month or two until the DMV decides to send us the real ones. We have a little registration printout that gets taped in the front window.

The Car has a VIN# and the plates are assigned to the VIN.
If you Sell your car, you can have DMV assign the old plates to the new VIN.

Or turn in the old plates to DMV and pay more for their new plates.

But the car has to have plates to leave the dealer.

I think you need to check with Dianne, but it seems to me that she told me you pay Ca fees if you are driving the car, the same as if it was permanently here. Then, when you get home, your state gives you a credit for the fees paid. I assume that your state then recovers the difference from California. I suppose you could apply for the green stickers, but they do ask for your address, so.........
Bottom line is Dianne will have the answers.

The "dealer plates" are simply advertising, and have nothing to do with registration of the vehicle. You are not required to display them, but it does tell everyone, "Look, I have a new car." So there is a certain amount of fun in having them on the car. There is a lady in my neighborhood who has had them on her car for a good year now, but one of these days she'll probably get stopped and told her car is no longer "new."

As others have said, you don't pay the CA taxes if it is delivered to you outside of CA. If you take it in CA, you pay the CA taxes, but get a credit for those paid taxes when you register in TX. Still not a good idea, since the total CA and local taxes are higher than the 6.25% TX motor vehicle tax (no local sales tax on cars in TX).

I think my plans are going to have to change! I guess I need to consider having the car shipped to me rather than taking delivery of the car at the dealership. I wonder how long it takes to have the car delivered to Fort Worth, TX.
