It’s best to charge just before you leave the house as opposed to charging when you get home. I set my car to STOP charging at 6am so it knows to start at about 3am.

It starts to adapt to your own driving.

When I behave myself (in traffic and speed issues, LOL), as I am not into the HOV lanes yet, I can turn my 12.4 into about 17-18 EASILY… but I know once I get myself into the HOVs and start going faster, what I will do is pop the EV button off as soon as traffic starts going smooth/fast… and leave it off till I get back off the freeway.

I just emailed this to one of my clients with a similar concern... thought I'd share it.

my ev range seems to be a direct function of mu actual ev mileage. i do 15 mile commute 4 days a week on pure ev with .1 - .2 left on the range when i get home. my ev "range" was 13.1 when i got it from the dealer, and it has steadily climbed to 14.6 tonite.

My EV range is about 11.x. Most days, I drive half a mile to the freeway and then get on the freeway. I don't have the kind of commute that lets me slowly cruise at an EV-friendly speed.

But I understand that "EV Range" reflects how you drive, not the battery's capacity.

i do think my battery capacity has increased a bit tho. when i first got my car, i did my 14.8 mile commute and had .1 left on the estimated range. 5 weeks later, i can do my commute, drive anither .5 miles and still have .7 left on the range.

I wish I was like you all. My distance is down to 10.8 from my original 13.3. This is to be expected through as my apartment is on top of a hill so i have to be careful not to engage the engine going down the hill, and a lot of potential charge is lost. And then about a mile from work i have to go UP a steep hill so that destroys my charge as well. I wish my commute to work was on flat ground!

These batteries do have a "break in" period, after which a capacity increase could be noticed.....

Mine had been hovering in the range of 12.1 - 12.3 for a long time and after a trip to Philly this past weekend my last two charges have shown 12.5 and 12.7.

I've seen the same thing here in Nashville; first week, I showed 13 miles on a charge. These days I show 9.9.

I use A/C a lot, charge in the middle of the night, and Nashville has lots of hills; is the car adjusting the rnge based on my driving these first 6 weeks?

exactly what it's doing. would you want it to use some other parameter?

those of you who see it decreasing, is it following your actual ev range? iow, if it started at 13 (which most seemed to come from the factory at) and now your seeing 10, are you driving around 10 and the ice comes on?

I was seeing a decrease, last week I was down to 11.4, and now I am seeing an increase- today I am up to 12.1, and I am hoping for a continued increase of the EV range.

When I drive to work, I use around 2 ev to go the 4.4 miles to work. But, on the other hand, because driving back home, I have more uphill driving, I use about 5.7 or close to 6 EV to drive the same 4.4 miles home.

Recently I have been trying to get some Regeneration EV on my longer distance driving, and I wonder if that has been helping to get my EV range back up or not.

What is the basis for that statement. I know that normal Li-io based technologies and the type used in the volt do NOT have any type of breakin or memory. It would seem odd for Toyota to choose a battery with such a problem. (Break-in periods were common on Nickel based batteries but not Lithium).

Its more likely changes in weather (warmer == more charge) and/or the car training the driver to be more efficient.

My full battery shows a 16.7 mile range today, and has been in the 16's since it started getting warm in Southern California.

How are you all computing your actual EV range? I would think the only way to have an absolute range, is to start and drive all EV until it runs out. Then even that is going to depend on speed, hills, stops, hell even wind will affect it.

There are SOO many variables that the range displayed is really just a guess. My range always tends to show about 10-11. I drive 5.9 miles to work and can pretty much always get back home with 2 miles left or so. So I am getting 12-15 miles. Thats better than the 10-11 I see in the morning.

I charge when I get home from work, so my car, sometimes, will sit with a full charge for 5-10 hours. Too many times I need to run to the store for something and I would hate to not have a charge.

Some times I use AC, some times I use heated seats. Some times I listen to really loud music (this really seemed to drain the range), windows down, system up (and pretend I am 18 again)

People ask me and I say I get 11-16 miles on EV, which is right where I expect to be.

we're not computing it, it comes up on the screen below the battery icon when you turn the car on. you're thinking actual range.
