As corrupt as it would be I could see a dealership saying they want to charge you for the 'time' it takes to hook up and make the change. But, acting like they cannot do it is absurd.

My dealer did make both changes before I took delivery of the car. The salesman had no issues with it at all, but then I deal with fleet/internet sales and those guys are so much easier to work with.

Just the fact that the owner's manual says it can be done by the dealer tells me it's not a legal issue. As someone else here said, the altered setting is actually the legal limit but the default setting is Toyota going above and beyond that.

Mine did it at 10K. The service adviser said: "Oh you cannot totally disable it, you will still have one beep." She knew exactly what she was doing. No charge, but I did have to wait an extra 30 mins for the shop foreman to arrive to do it. I guess not everyone is TechStream savy.

My next service, the seat belt beep is on my To Do list. I often put my laptop case on the passenger seat. It is just heavy enough to set off the beep.

I turned the continuous reverse beep off myself using the Android app "Torque", paired with a bluetooth OBD2 dongle. I still get a single beep when entering reverse, but I actually like that level of feedback.

I believe you can do the same thing with the ScanGauge that many people on this forum use.

You should now go add that to your custom dictionary so it never happens again!

Purchased my 2012 new last week. I asked the salesman regarding the backup beeping and he stated "NO", they wouldn't do it for safety reasons. I didn't push the issue. I did a search online and there are several articles regarding, turn the car on, go to ODO, then trip B, etc. I tried it several times and couldn't get it to work. Will try again once I have more time.

That was for Gen II. Gen III needs to be changed via CAN commands.

Show them the page in the book. If that doesn't work call Toyota while you are at the dealer and complain. If you get a survey about the service visit give them a poor rating.

Do you think he would have changed his mind if you said, "No changes, no sale." and walked? If the next level salesman or Sales Manager didn't get on you like flies on crap I'd be surprised. Next time, and for all potential buyers : ask the question up front and make the changes a condition of the sale. If one dealer won't accomodate another will. For those who already bought, hold on to the customer satisfaction survey until the car is configured to your satisfaction. Make it clear to the salesman & the sales manager that refusing to make the changes (and at no charge) will result in a poor survey. If they still refuse you have to admire their backbone then slam them on the survey. When enough people complain or it starts hitting someone at the dealership they'll change.

What a crock. I suppose all my other vehicles that DON'T beep in Reverse are "unsafe"? That would have sent me to another dealer. Our Toyota dealer did everything I asked at the first service (5k), cheerfully and at no charge. Single reverse beep, driver's door handle now unlocks all, and something else I can't recall at the moment....

My dealership disabled the backup beep at my first 5000 mi service...no questions asked...you can also unlock all 4 doors instead of just one by yourself...while inside the car with the car off, hold down the lock and unlock buttons for 5 or so seconds...the digital display of the car will come on with all four doors open...

Bought the 2012 late Jan 2013. Took it in one week later (on a Saturday) after emailing the sales person. He had me come into the sales department and personally took the car over to service to disable the reverse beeping and brought it back himself in under 15 mintues ... told me it would be a lot faster than my going directly to service and having to go through all their paperwork and waiting. No discussion before the sale about this and was done with a smile and no charge when I brought it in a week later

Do you guys think there's a way to just lower the irritating sound it makes? I think I wouldn't mind it as much if the sound was a lower. I feel like strangling it when I hear it every time.
