...jumped mine a few times there is a Red contact point under the front hood to the drivers side.
If you have AAA they can come out or a neighbor.
I went with Optima they ship it out quite fast.
I am glad you think this is easy DIY but some the bolts are hard to get off but sounds like you can handle it.

The bolts do worry me a little, but only because I'll have to rustle up some of the tools, like the ratchet extension thing. I've got small hands, so I can get into those tiny spaces, and I hope none of the bolts are clamped down too tightly. My bigger wonder now is how heavy is the battery? I'm good to about 45 lbs. on my own. I can't imagine the battery is THAT heavy...
I'll sleep on all this, I think, and decide what to do in the A.M.
Thanks everyone for your info and advice!

Sorry I have not been back to you before now "time difference". The Exide battery part no " as I am sure you know by now" is FP-AGM51JIS.

The JIS part of the number is for the very small connector posts used on the Prius battery. If you can obtain one of these batteries they are superior to both the OEM and the Optima in amp/hr capacity (in simple terms amount of electricity stored) so are able to stand unused for longer periods. The battery is a direct replacement for the OEM as is the Optima provided you get the one with the JIS posts.

Replacement is a fairly easy DIY job and the battery weights around 25LBS.

As has been said on previous posts if you jump start the car double no triple check you are connecting the jump battery the correct way round, there is no second chance. Hope this all helps and does not sound to difficult.

    John.

I decided to order an Exide battery last night, exactly the FP-AGM51JIS, after I found a local battery dealer who claimed "order before 10A.M, same day delivery"! I asked if I could expect the battery today or Saturday, and he assured me it would be here today! Now to borrow a few tools....

I have to add to this... I did ask the guy if he had a better price than what he quoted and told him an Optima was only $199. He sent me back some very high numbers, and I would have countered with numbers of my own, but then he sent a SECOND email that said, "You did say the Optima correct? You should call me when you get a chance.... Im nice! "

I mean, RLY? Really? I need to get a gender neutral email account name, I think.

I believe the Exide is about $160, and have seen $20 discount vouchers on the web sorry can't remember where have a dig around. Exide make a really good product with a 4 year full replacement guaranty as I said before (I have no affiliation), and they have been in the UK battery market as a leader for over 100years. Please let us know how things turn out with fitting ect all the best.

If your car does not have the Smart system, the 12V battery will be smaller (the longest dimension of the battery case is a couple of inches smaller) than the 12V battery for Smart-equipped Prius.

The significance of this is that with a small battery, the battery tray probably is smaller so a larger battery may not fit very well unless the battery tray is also replaced.

This is why the Exide spec references a particular battery tray. However it is not clear that the tray will have a part number on it. I haven't tried to look for that.

Since you have access to the battery area you might take a flashlight and measuring tape with you on your next trip crawling through the hatch, to see if you can look down to find the tray. Measure the length of the battery and see whether the tray will allow installation of a longer battery. If any doubt I suggest you stay with the correct Toyota battery to minimize installation difficulties. Good luck.

so close.... I should have slowed down a minute yesterday when I ordered the battery...

yup, I need the other battery tray/clamp assembly. Cheap part, wondering if a local autoparts store can order and get it for me faster than another online ordering place. toyotapartsexpress? toyotapartszone? PepBoys?
    yargh.

You will probably need to buy the battery tray from a Toyota dealer's parts dept. I buy from toyotaworld.com but any of the other dealerships that sell parts at a discount over the web would be fine.

Ordered it. After looking at a few different websites for Toyota/Scion parts, it looks like they all are using the same "search interface". The look and feel of most of them is exactly the same... Shipping costs as much as the part! But, I'm still under what I'd pay at a Dealer, as far as I can tell.

Good. For future reference, you might consider buying other maintenance parts when you place an order, to help leverage the shipping charge: wiper blade refills, engine air filters, cabin air filters, oil filters etc.

Could you name the Exide dealer where you were able to get your battery from and the price. This will help other PC members and the dealer in the future, as some members have been unable to find this battery or suppliers in the US.

From what you have said the service from your supplier seems very good, and this battery should be an excellent choice for the Prius with it's high capacity and deep discharge capability along with the long guarantee.

My apology for not knowing about the even smaller battery fitted to your car as in the UK we only get the larger but still puny (LOL) battery on all models. Obviously a cost saving thing in the US by Toyota.

    Here's some info;
The orginal battery in the 2005 Prius withOUT Smartkey is part no. "S34B20R", while the part no. for 05 Prius WITH smartkey is "S46B24R". The Exide replacement battery is a single part number, FP-AGM51JIS.
You must pick up a "Toyota battery tray/clamp assy, P/N 74440-47020, IF you are replacing the S34B20R battery (w/out Smartkey). That tray/clamp assembly runs between $13-16 or so.

I ordered the Exide Battery online from:
    Battery Service Corporation
    Bensenville, IL
    (630) 595-4244
Wholesale Batteries | Car Batteries Chicago | Battery Service Corporation
I chose them because they could do next day delivery within 60 mile radius of Chicago, and there is a rebate program going on for Exide batteries as well.

Their list price was $166.95, plus our high Chicago sales tax of 8.25%, bringing my cost to $180.72.

I placed an online order for the bracket, but they are dawdling and haven't shipped yet, so I'm going to get on the bike and drive over to the Toyota dealership and order one there. They said if I get the order in by 4pm, they can have it tomorrow, but won't do credit cards over the phone.

Thanks for the info, this will help others. Battery Service Corp was one of the companies that I found and also the $20 rebate. Some PC members were unable to find this battery when I posted about it a few weeks ago, it should prove to be the perfect battery for the Prius being high capacity and deep discharge capable at a very competitive price.

I guess you were unlucky to have the smaller battery in your car but you have overcome the problem, and as I said in a previous post we do not get the small battery in the UK.

May as well follow-up, better late than never.
I got the battery in just fine after the new mount piece arrived, and had been driving around just fine since July. Yesterday, though, the car shutdown but was behaving as if i had left the fob in the ignition. Didn't think anything of it, but this morning, the car won't start. The battery has drained, and I"m left wondering why the car thought it was still "on" while it was "off"...

Now I have to figure out how to get it to a repair shop, pronto.

Can the Prius be jumped via the battery in the trunk? I have the same problem...2008 Prius. Seems completely dead except for the clock, which is very dim. Unfortunately it's parked in a tandem garage and my jumper cables won't reach the front.

I'd jump start it from the front jumper terminal (being *very* careful with the polarity at *both* jumper ends) and then disable the sks (so that it needs the key in the slot to start) until you get the issues resolved.

There is a switch to disable smart key system. Someone here can tell you exactly where it is (my Prius doesn't have that system).
