Not that I'm worried. Love my lil Prius...just found it interesting what can be done. Now if we could only "tune" the Prius.

 

Speaking only for myself, I'm getting tired of these reports about "hacking" into a Prius. I'm getting tired of the so called "research" regardless of the supposed ends.

I think the headlines, create an unnecessary fear or hysteria, as in "A Prius Is Hackable!". So I'm tired of reading about whatever bunch of geeks get funding to mess around with a Prius.

So What?

I assume constantly, that almost any machine, computer system or otherwise can be modified or infiltrated and made to be operated differently or behave differently. I came to this conclusion sometime around 1983, after watching the movie WarGames.

So I don't get this recent onslaught of sensationalistic headlines, proclaiming the hackability of The Prius. If you are doing it for a legitimate reason? Do it. Document your research and move on.

If I ever get in my Prius, press the power button and it suddenly asks me "Shall We Play A Game?".....I promise you I will answer...No.

 

Mostly I agree but it is yes and no. Yes because in this case it is total BS. If I'm out to get someone, there are much lower tech and less risky ways. But no for another reason.

No one is doing 'advanced' work with EVs, diesels or gas cars. Those technology cars do not have enough 'smarts' or are so technologically brain-dead, no one really cares. EVs because there are so few of them.

Sure the manufacturers have their 'test mules' but they don't do anything but generate 'press releases' about capabilities. Potentials that are not on the show room or priced so high as to be "Unobtanium" (aka., Toyota's 'Advanced Technology' package.)

I found it interesting more for the fact tuning - getting into the ECM and modifying the A/F ratio and timing.

 

This is the coolest thing I've read all day...

That's why I have a Prius"v" level 2 with NO navigation.

I even refuse to have or enable a Bluetooth phone with it.

The only secret or confidential information I trust is what I have in my memory. Every thing I write down, say or put in email, I consider public domain. So, I am cognizant of that for every moment and every second I'm alive.

 

I listened to the two hackers/researchers' interview on Science Friday. IMHO, Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek (the researchers) were irresponsible in not providing full disclosure in the overall threat of this type of attack on a Prius. Toyota designed the electronics where Bluetooth has no access to the vehicle's core functions. There is NO WAY to perform a remote attack using Bluetooth vector in the current line of the Toyota Prius. You would have to have direct physical access to the vehicle's electronics in order to perform an attack. I considered what the researchers created was more hype about this vulnerability than current reality.

 

Basically, you need access to the OBD II connector, as Toyota has, when they program the ECU.

Theoretically, if hackers haven't already, they can rest the mileage of the odometer in the ECU's memory.

That's why it has always been and always been to check out the car based on more than just the odometer reading.

If there is dishonest money to ne made, the crooks will be out there.

Reselling totaled out flooded cars have always been o scam. I remember reading about them in the late 1960's.
