CVT fuild change.....

    The Imperial size is often close enough that in a pinch, they will work. If you're looking to get a set, there is a "brake service hex" set that will often include the correct size

    I got new washers, but reused the original ones. After 5 fluid changes, no leaks. But yes, I made sure the new ones were handy

    Thanks man,

    I bought the two KOBALT HEX wrench sets at Lowes for $3.40 each after discount. The handles are 7.4 inches long which should be ok. If not I will use a short pipe extension. I am thinking about the floor pump and the hand pump since I can see a need for both.

    Can the CVT fluid change be done using front ramps to elevate the Prius to allow access to the plugs?

    I changed the fluid yesterday, it was easier then I expected. Thanks to the suggestions on the use of vinyl tube and funnel. I bought some 1/2" OD tubing from OSH and it worked perfectly.

    I made a mess at first by dumping the fluid too fast and did not insert the tubing far enough. In the end I put in 3 & 2/3 qts of ATF WS.

    My car has 117k miles and the old fluid was pretty dark so I suspect it has never been changed before. Next DIY will be coolant for engine and inverter.

    There are two styles of 1 quart/litre bottles: those with a wide mouth and those with a narrow mouth. Most of the pumps I have seen fit the narrow mouth.

    However, the pump still works even if you can't screw it down on the bottle. Just be prepared for a bit of a mess.

    Did you put the car up on ramps to do the fluid drain, or is there some other method that is more effective?

    My local independent shop said he would do it for $50 if I supplied the fluid..

    I did not put the car up on stands, I was able to reach in to get to the drain and fill ports. The reach is about the same as if you were doing an oil change oil change without raising the car.

    I would say go for it if you don't want the hassle of cleaning up and dropping off the oil fluid. $50 sounds more reasonable then the $150 (w. fluid) at the dealer.

    Keep in mind that when you refill, due to the car being at a slight uphill angle, you'll end up with the case slightly overfilled
