CV Transmission

    The fundamental difference between between the Prius transmission and any other automotive transmission is fixed gearing. The planetary arrangement is just a packaging detail. Granted, the planetary arrangement is convenient for size and function, but the real key is power splitting between mechanical and electrical drive paths, all without clutches, bands, or shifting gears.

    If it is, I must be pro-life. I think it should have a chance to make its way in the world. If HSD is good by itself, I'm not so sure there'd be no legitimate use for a transmission that's like HSD but has two additional operating points where electrical loss is minimized. Maybe the weight and complexity make it uncompetitive for a Prius-class shuttlecraft, but for anything intended to have a tow rating, maybe not.
