Well Jayman, I can see you've been drinking the cheap stuff again. That must explain all of the thinking about this topic.

I agree with you about "the good old days" verses now. I'll take the current technology any day of the week.

From my experience, the most likely failure mode for an ECU is a firmware glitch from sloppy programming or inadequate testing. I wouldn't expect that from a major auto company, at least not in a safety critical area. With those sort of systems we usually design-in backup and failsafe systems.

A large EMP could be a problem. The Prius has pretty good shielding, but a big EMP is hard to stop. Now that you have me thinking about it, I'm considering a big faraday cage and mu metal shielding. I'm not sure about seeing out to steer; maybe I'll use a parascope. :D

Trust me on this, as I'm an expert: after 3-4 shots, there is absolutely NO difference between that la-dee-da fancy-schmancy stuff and the cheap rotgut. If I have enough time this summer, I'll happily book a flight out your way, get two bottles (One of the cheap rotgut, one of the fancy-schmancy stuff), and we'll match shot-for-shot

I guarantee after 7-10 shots, we'll both be passed out and your woman will probably throw you out of the house.

Hey, I *like* that scenario. See you next week!

Seriously though, if such an event were to occur, we'd have one hell of a lot more to worry about than whether the Prius cruise control would still work

Then one should not be driving the car :_> And someone who is worried about multiple simultaneous failures probably should not be driving any car.
