My model 3 can briefly take 250 kw, the new porsche 800 kw, 8x the model 3.s 250 kw would be 2 MW. Having helped design a test chamber that needed 2 MW, it is indeed quite doable it just costs money. Remember if every vehicle was an ev in a country that country would use less not more energy. The new infrastructure would be initially costly.

well exactly. Now we know you don't really want to go under 5%, and I'm guessing to fast charge you will only get to 85% the full soc, so if you want 300 miles charged in 15 minutes, you would need to charge a 94 kwh battery (smaller than a tesla model S, that charged about 75 kwh in 15 minutes -> 300 kw. Now of course its going to slow down and there will be charging losses so it probably needs to be able to do 500 kw for short periods of time. a 2 MW grid hook up with capacitors to buffer for the quick surges could probably serve a 8 charger bay. Still to charge that fast you probably need to liquid cool the whole charging apparatus, making it much more expensive than the tesla v3 250 kw chargers.

 

funny that liquid-cooled be brought up. Tesla designed a liquid-cooled cable some years ago. There was still too much heat for their satisfaction at the connector. So, around 10 months ago what did Tesla do? They posted a patent for a water cooled connector.

hmm maybe they are getting ready for 500 kw for the roadster and cyber truck. With a 600 mile pack and that much juice they should be able to easily exceed 300 miles in 15 minutes.

btw - a grocery store that I sometimes go to just added 4 - 62.5 kw dc chargers. I get unlimited use with my utility subscription ($25/6 months to encourage plug-ins) but they have chademo and combo plug but no tesla. I know there is a conversion plug, but don't really see any that are cheep. Good to know that at least locally we are building the infrastructure. I'm sure it will pick up more when the new tesla factory opens.

 

Many times companies work on things that don't turn out to be currently needed or economical. And it may take a year or more to prepare the patent application. They go ahead and submit the patent even though it might not be a product in the short term.

And it sometimes takes years and many back and forths to finally get the patent approved. As one who only got word of the one he had been shepherding through the system after I retired.
