    I love the way tomato stems smell. Why can't the fruit be more like that?

    I suppose somebody's going to say it's some deadly poisonous compound or something.

    Sliced seeded rye made in the bakery dept of the local grocery.

    I buy very little bread in ready-to-eat form but that stuff makes the cut.

    Wouldn't you know it, I used more for a breakfast sandwich today:

    More of the same lettuce & tomato, a little mayo, smoked salmon, fried egg & dill.

    Speaking for myself only, life's to short to bake bread.
    I do own a bread maker (mostly used to mix and knead) but seldom use it - since 10 submarine patrols and about a half a million wedge shaped "midrats" sandwiches give me cause to deeply appreciate that very few things in life are the greatest thing since.....'sliced bread.'

    Leaves and stems have trichomes full of chemicals contributing to that smell. They interfere with insect herbivory but won't hurt people. Dry then fry some greenery and see if you like it. Trichomes don't grow on tomato fruit skins. Skins are cutin, a polyester. All the genetic engineering in the world can't make trichomes form there.

    Nope. The glycoalkaloid is tomatine. It interferes with fungal and bacterial damage. Not very harmful to humans, but you could probably eat enough to make you barf. Tomatine is also anti oxidant and such are trendy in human nutrition. Benefit > risk. Up to the barf levels.

    Plant family Solanaceae includes tomatoes and fascinating others. Potatoes green parts contain a different glycoalkaloid that can do you wrong. But it cooks away. Nightshade also called deadly gives fair warning. Those little purple berries are not for you. Chili peppers play a different game, and some people really enjoy visiting 'Scoville'. Tobacco leaves have alkaloid nicotine that gives a buzz, but inhaling that smoke ,,, well, decide for yourselves.
