In the discussion over the need for mandatory back up cameras, wasn't one of the against points was that it could lead to lazy design for rearward visibility?

 

Get the car optioned right and use the cameras to display on the rear view mirror and the problem goes away for me, but not for her and it is her car.

 

Does it display even when in D?

 

Tesla cars can display the backup camera while in Drive.

 

up until software version 7, you could keep rear camera view up at the top of the screen, too, like a secondary backup mirror. When Ver 8 software took that away? She-who-must-be-obeyed blew a gasket.

One purpose is if you have the trunk stacked with something, on my Rav4 you switch the blocked rear view mirror to camera mode and you get a wide angle view out the back of the car displayed on that mirror. Yes it displays there when in D or in R like the normal mirror.

 

Does Tesla display the backup cam in the rear-view mirror, or does it put it on the center console? I've seen it done both ways in other cars. Is the resolution high enough to identify small objects on the ground?

 

Like most things Tesla, each camera iteration becomes higher definition. One thing that all camera manufacturers for the rear of cars need to work on, is some way to keep water spray during inclement weather from obscuring what you're trying to see.
Maybe a little compressed air source? Or a teeny wiper?

 

They could steal a trick from the Samsung Watch 3. If it gets water in the speaker's aperture, it can send a high intensity, low frequency pulse through the speaker to "blow out" the water. I imagine a similar concept might shake any water free.

 

Center console.
The resolution is very good, however it is a fish-eye lense, so there are limits. It depends what you mean by small.

 

But in any case, a rear view camera image is maybe 2" diagonal. On the Model 3 the rear view shows 3 cameras.
The primary one is about 8" diagonal and the two rear facing side cameras are about 3" diagonal.
Prior to an update about a year ago there was just the single rear camera view that was larger
