Community organized troll ban button?

Ok, them maybe it was slowturd and his stinky turdles that were stinking up the place.

 

There was concern that the Spam Hammer on Ars Technica would be used to suppress unpopular opinion. (reality has a liberal bias) The Powers That Be let it be known that using the Hammer on non Spam would be Bannable. There has been little abuse. And no repeat abuse.

 

The rare troll I want dealt with is one who week after week posts FUD and misinformation that I and others feel obliged to waste our time refuting so that newcomers are not befuddled. Garden variety trolls go away when ignored.

PC does not suffer from group-think or mob mentality so I doubt a troll button would be abused, but I do not think it necessary.

 

The newcomers will figure it out. Stop wasting your time. I did.

Ironically, I got involved on that daily blog for Volt to dispell the misinformation. They got really angry too, not the slightest bit happy that someone with so much real-world data was setting the record straight. But the webmaster knew it kept them honest and the banter generated lots of traffic. So, I wasn't ever banned. Of course, always being polite and resisting the temptation to follow their red-herrings really help... being was a quite challenge. Personally, I was truly amazed so much cheerleading could take place with so little actual design information to support the claims. In the end, that hype was proven unworthy of the attention it got and they've been cautious about what they say to repeat it from happening again. So, I feel like I came out ahead, having learned quite a bit about Volt through observation of the design as it progressed.

From a troll point of view, they dropped far more bait than I ever bit at. Their FUD harmed their own credibility, despite me being the outsider. It's a roll-reversal usually overlooked due to newbies assuming veteran members would never attempt such a thing. To my delight, the moderators on the big GM forum actually turned on those doing that, since it was bringing down the reputation of the website as a whole.

Long story short, neither banning nor ignoring works for some. There has to be a variety of approaches working in concert with each other all at the same time... a multi-front anti-FUD effort. Turns out, that's a good participation opportunity for newbies anyway. They get a chance to sound off and contribute their experiences.

No, basically have it work like a 1-time deposit. Make that very clear during registration. Trolls will be discouraged. Newbies who have questions or want to say hi will have to stick around. No more threads where the OP doesn't follow up. He or she will want to, in order to get their money back.

Forcing people to post will seem annoying to them at first, but eventually they'll do it naturally. The idea is more participation and better participation. People will forget about the money and have it back in no time. If they don't, they lost $10 but can always come back at any time.

That is how you run a business folks!

 

I did hear of a site that once they had a fee the trollers left.

 

I'm pretty sure SageBrush is referring to a former well known (and very atypical) troll who used to post FUD, misinformation, and Prius slander on a daily basis here. I don't think he was referring to anything john1701a was doing/posting on other boards/blogs...

Typical trolls go away (or are banned?) after a short period of time...

 

You're sure it wasn't a currently active poster? Perhaps there are differing opinions on that.

 

I have a question for the mods here. When we report a thread how do you get notified? Does it get placed in a forum, or does the report go out in an email blast? Maybe the system currently in place works as is.
