    Paul, back in 2006 Toyota had previously issued a TSB to the effect that the engine ECU should be updated to the latest version with P3191 issues. It was not until later that Toyota decided that cleaning the throttle body interior was all that was required to deal with that problem. Since the engine ECU was replaced on Toyota's dime, I am fine with that.

    I've replaced the front struts and rear shocks as well on the 2004. The cars have been driven primarily in urban, paved areas.

    Seeing how you are in MI snow country, did you also get P1436 indicating exhaust bypass valve malf. or did you get a whole new mid exhaust when the cat failed?

    My 01 classic repairs 2005-2014 (97,700 miles) (completed myself if not indicated otherwise):

    Doesn't include 2 drive belts, fluids, filters, tires, 2 other 12v batteries, etc.
    Tire wear has been above normal (on edges), but no where near what others have experienced.

    7/09 Front brake pads, DuraLast $50. Both orig. inner pads disinegrated. I think the bond broke between the pad and the backing plate. Never an issue again.
    7/09 Front brake rotors turned $27 (shop)
    7/09 Denso Iridium Spark Plugs $39.
    11/09 Wheel alignment, shims installed $138. (shop)
    12/09 R rear wheel bearing/hub assembly (Timken) $193.
    12/09 Diagnose CEL, P3191, 3101, TSB - clean throttle body $0. (Toyota)
    10/10 L rear wheel bearing/hub assembly (Timken) $190.
    9/11 Diagnose CEL $110. Toyota tech: "needs HV Battery, Hybrid ECU and fuel tank" (no mention of loose cap)
    9/11 Electric Water Pump, recall $0. (Toyota)
    10/11 Diagnose CEL $90. Toyota tech: "needs HV battery, 12v battery, Hybrid ECU and exhaust pipe"
    11/11 Rebuilt HV battery with 2010 cell modules $921. with tax
    4/12 Steering Pinion Shaft Nuts, recall $0. (Toyota)
    3/13 Left control arm link $24.
    2/14 12v Battery (Optima under warranty) $20. shipping
    2/14 Installed middle exhaust with salvage part, P1436. $200.
    4/14 CEL/Emissions Diagnostics, P0171 $74. (shop)
    4/14 MAF sensor (Denso) $52.
    4/14 A/C charged, leak tested $66. (shop)
    5/14 Iridium Spark Plugs (Denso) $39.
    5/14 Downstream O2 sensor (Denso), P0420. $52.
    5/14 Upstream O2 sensor (Denso) $32.
    5/30 Aftermarket Cat. Converter (Eastern Echo II, w/flange and O2 port), P0420. $163.
    Install, weld cat. to pipe. $45. (shop)

    Includes total vehicle specific and beyond expected maintenance/replace worn parts: $2199.
    Estimated gas savings over vehicle it replaced (20mpg vs 43mpg) = 2612 gallons, $6815.
    Gas savings minus vehicle specific repairs = (+) $4616.

    When the initial brake pause problem was first reported, I ran a survey to see who else might have seen the symptom. This was part of understanding the scope of the problem.

    Although I have other problems with Consumer Reports, their annual owner's survey of their readers has some credibility. Also, there is a long running thread where someone is trying to get folks to self-report their Prius repair history.
