i completely understand. i would not be happy with toyota either, $900. is ridicules these days. you may want to contact evse upgrade to see if they can fix it. alternatively, i would accept paprius offer, that's a great deal, and as you now know, a new cable isn't necessarily better than a used one.
Thanks, it's good to know there's a cheapest alternative solution. I sent a letter to Toyota, let's see what kind of answer I'll get. I'll update this post once I get an answer.
Please do let us know. They need to stand behind their customers better than what you've seen so far. A cable that new should not fail unless it's been mistreated. I saw my wife put the empty trash can on part of my cable today when she brought the can in from the curb. (The trash can sits under the outlet.) I informed her what a replacement costs and she about swallowed her tongue!
Why don't you take both ends apart and check continuity of each wire with a $5.00 multimeter? A very source for another cable would be your local junk yard, call up several.
There is a relay in between both ends which only closes after plugging-in, switching power on and reaching consent between the EVSE and the on-board charger.
Here's the final update... finally Back in April, I sent a letter to Toyota about the issue with the defective cable. They replied by letter saying that they couldn't reach me. Weird... So I call them, and get redirected to someone more important who was very helpful. He contacted the dealership and setup an appointment. I go to the appointment were they re-test the cable and order a new one... for free! Then I just have to wait for a call. Still nothing by the end of May, I call Toyota again who didn't have any status. So I call the dealership who redirect me to another service who can't answer... I decide to go directly. I tell the same guy that I'm here to pickup the charging cable... he didn't order it and asked me to come back 2 weeks later. End of June, I go back and they finally had it. 4 months to get a replacement cable. Most of the trouble came from the lazy and incompetent people at the dealership.
Thanks for the update. Glad you finally got it. WOW! I think I'd try to complain to the owner or at least the general manager.
Glad this worked out OK. Note that you can install a 240v L2 charger for less than the cost of the 120V one that Toyota sells. Mike
