Got a price over the phone to change the trans fluid at $99

Went there and the service manager told me it actually is $289 but he would give me a 10% discount for the misquote ... I left and was pissed.

How do you get around these toyota dealers and their effed up scheme?

 

If I had bothered to go there at all I would have told him his bait and switch method just lost a customer forever and that his outrageously priced service can be done by any teenager for $75 or less including the fluid in less than 30 minutes. I would say the same thing to the dealership owner later over the phone. But I probably wouldn't go there for this anyway because any mechanic can do this. My independent mechanic did it for $30 when I supplied the fluid, funnel w/long neck, and basic instructions and pictures with the Haynes manual.

 

I dont want to jinx myself, I do all of my own maintenance but had my Prius in 2-3 times for recalls and stuff they screwed up after touching my car (steering wheel off center after steering shaft recall).

The dealer didnt try to upsell or overcharge me on anything... I was surprised. I even bought wiper blade refills at the Toyota dealer parts department on the cheap.

A transmission fluid change on the Prius seems easy peasy, compared to the trans fluid changes Ive done in the past (dropping the pan, replacing the filter/filter grommet, etc). Even if I got lazy, I would NEVER pay any place over $99 for the job.

 

Why is my nearby Toyota parts charging me $11.75 per quart of fluid?

 

Holy crap. Let me call my local Dealer real quick and ask what they are charging.

EDIT: My local Toyo Dealer (Hoot McInerney) charges $8.98 per quart of Toyotas World Standard (WS) transmission fluid. Hope this helps!

 

Regardless of the price (House Brand transmission fluids tend to be pricey), it's peanuts. The few bucks you're sweating over, you'd drop that amount on a few hours in a Vancouver parking lot, LOL.

I forget the details, haven't got the receipts on hand, but I believe 4 Liters and the washers set me back around $40 Canadian when I did ours.

 

I just got mine transmission fluid drained and filled at a local shop that specializes in Toyota and Lexus maintenance only. They charged me $80 for everything. Not a bad deal since the Toyota dealer wanted to charge me $289 even though I told them it was just a drain and fill and not a flush.

 

I'm taking my 4 quarts of ATF WS to my local jersey mechanic who works on my family's cars and used to work on my nissan. Any last minute suggestions you can give that I can mention to my mechanic?

 

Don't forget two aluminum crush washers for the drain and fill plugs. Good luck!

 

Alu washers - check. Hopefully he has a fluid pumper to fill it up from underneath.

 

This may help him. It is for a Gen I but, many of the steps are similiar (sorry, I don't have one for a Gen II).
The main difference is, you don't have to remove the pan because the magnet is on the drain plug bolt on the Gen II (plus there is no pan).

After posting this I realized this will probably confuse him more than it helps so I don't recommend even showing this to him.

 

It was sure easy. He did it under 30 mins plus slapped on the G7 chassis stabilizer for $25 cash. Toyota dealers can kiss my ____!!!

 

Just did 3 of my 4 pri tonight, my silver car was bought used has 105,000 fluid was dark normal magnet fillings, tan prius was bought used has 83,000 fluid was not as dark normal magnet fillings, red prius was bought new we payed a dealer to change the fluid at 60,000 so this Change was a 60,000 mile change and the fluid was still red but darker than the new fluid. I would Say 60,000 miles is right on.
