Technology has its place, but that is insane. Overall, I've noticed German car companies really don't want DIY servicing. Consider that with most models, the change oil reminder must be reset by the dealer scantool, not by some combination of key turns or switch pushing

I suppose if the BMW in question isn't an oil burner, no problem. From what I've seen around here, that is doubtful

Now that's a thorough test! Well done.
    Thank you

My reasons are to reduce the amount of good oil wasted and dumped. So by using a long life synthetic (AECA A3 oil) and regular sampling, I achive
    1) Much less oil wasted.
    2) Positive documentation of the oil and engine condition
    3) Money saved by significantly longer oil change intervals
    4) Early warning of any engine issue (unlikely)
    5) Spend my oil money on Companies making high quality lubricants, not the outfits that cut the most corners.

And to raise a question that has probably come up before, how will the switch to synthetic affect my warranty, the regular warranty, not an extended?

It will not affect your warranty at all, just like changing from Shell to Exxon gas would not void your warranty.
