Changing the transmission fluid on a 2010 Prius

Funny, when it came to my kids...I never "asked".

 

Easy, he left the fill bolt on while draining so the flow was slow and steady. If you read comments on his youtube video, a lot of chumps, I mean people were leaving feedback that you take the fill bolt out first. I recommend leaving fill bolt on while draining also.

 

Yeah but maybe pre-loosened and finger-tightened. You don't want to find out too late you can't break it loose.

Me missus was fine with pouring in the ATF-WS, helped with brake fluid change too. With the latter you really can't do it alone.

With the transaxle though, you could just shoot in 3 quarts without worries, then take it 100 cc at a time, with a drain pan under to catch overflow when it happens.

You won't spill/lose much, checking after every 100 cc.

 

That is exactly what I do - works great!

 

The only thing that really matters is that you put the drain plug in first. DAH

 

Yeah, why is the floor oily?

 

I don't mean it's messy because of opening the plug. The pump method is messy because of gravity ... as you pump the fluid uphill into the fill hole, the fluid that is entering the transaxle tends to run along the outside of the tubing and dribble down towards the pump and the bottles. So you get fluid all over the pump handle, your hands, the bottles, ... The funnel sounds like a better method.

 

I use the pump from up above and there is no mess.

Done this method several times with good success.

Give it a shot and you’ll see.

Raytheeagle helped me change ATF on my prius, he pumped the ATF from top engine bay and I held the hose in the fill bolt socket, no mess from the hose. If anything, anyone who has a mess from the pump most likely bought a incredibly cheap pump or defective pump. Thanks again for helping me on that Raytheeagle.

 

Not all that difficult. Just like others have said, level up the car straight, and support em on safety jacks.

Have done the replacements using the hose and funnel method on all hybrid cars have worked on.

Its pretty much cool.

PS: 10mm Allen wrench rather, and not bolt as seen in the picture.

 

I accidentally did the tranny fluid change on floor ramps. As soon as it starting flowing out, I capped it. Do you think this will affect anything?

 

Nothing as dar as I'm concerned, as long as you did used the right quantity.

Please note: the ONLY way you can get the correct quantity IN is if the car is level (ie, NOT on ramps). If the front of the car is high, fluid will run out before the correct quantity is delivered.

 

That my method is easy

 

I use a air pressure pump but at the same time I made one that runs of of my air compressor to fill everything from gear dope to transmission fluid to antifreeze. Total cost $6 and I never ask for help to fill anything.

Cross contamination??

 

No cross contamination I do rinse it out with cleaner. It also can just be switched to another gallon jug at anytime I just keep the lid and parts and recycle to the next one. You havnt lived till you use one of these setups to fill a differential with dope it's so much easier

That stuff is like maple syrup. Still, I managed with a funnel and gravity. It was a warm day, lol.
