The pressure readouts seems to be "live": as I was running the air compressor, I could see the number go up on one of the sensors. This is noteworthy since, at least in the past", the Carista documentation said that you could just get snapshots with the Carista application. The way the app works, you can generally read things without a subscription; if you want to update something, you need the subscription. Since I have a subscription, when I clicked on the readout for a given sensor, it popped up a data-entry box to update the sensor ID. I didn't actually do a change, since I am not changing tires. Not much need for snow tires in California, unless one is going into the Sierras when they have snow, and then, one probably wants 4-wheel drive anyway.

 

Question on TPMS: how do you know which wheel/tire is which?

 

You have to identify corresponding TPMS ID on a scanner, in this case, Carista display. To do that, you have to first deflate (or inflate) one tire at a time and identify which ID shows a corresponding decrease (or increase) psi. Do that on 3 tires, you will know all 4 tires with corresponding ID. This process is the same for Techstream or ScanGuage.

Anyone figured out if another app besides Carista also reads TPMS info? I tested OBD Fusion and Auto Doctor, neither of which seem to have that feature. Carista is just so darn slow...

 

If you have an Android phone, you can use Tire Assistant - Apps on Google Play with a compatible OBD adapter. I use OBDLInk LX. One thing to remember, which I am sure Carista is the same way, is that app will not let you read TPMS data while you are driving. For that, you will need Scan Gauge II with special TPMS x-gauge code. I ended up using external TPMS for reading tire pressure while driving, and use Autel TS508 TPMS tool for reading and registering internal TPMS sensors.

 

Actually, Carista does read the TPMS while you are driving (well, when I'm a passenger, anyway). You should be checking pressure when the tires are cold, anyway, but I just wanted to clarify.

 

I didn't know that. I use external TPMS sensors and monitor like in the photo. But if all you want is cold tire pressure read off of internal TPMS sensors, then Tire Assistant I mentioned will work. It may also work with Carist OBDII adaptor.

 

Would that device read the OEM sensors?

 

No, it read only the external sensors, independent of the internal TPMS.

Edit: I changed my answer. Was thinking you were asking about the Hybrid Assistant, but realized you are asking now about the external TPMS.

 

Wow, why is the one tire 10 lbs higher than the other 3 tires? Just a test?

 

Sorry to revive this old thread but has anyone found an app that can turn off the toyota tpms so I can use my aftermarket TPMS similar to the one above? My winter tyres won't fit the toyota sensors and I like the constant display and alarms from my TPMS. In the uk since january 2015 TPMS must be fitted and no warning lights on dash must be present for annual test. A bit of sticky tape on dash won't cut it here.

 

Short answer is I don't know the way to turn off the Toyota OEM TPMS. For Gen3, people described shorting TPMS ECU harness with a paper clip to turn off the warning light on the dash, but I am not aware that trick being used on Gen4 or PP. It may still work, but may not.

As far as external TPMS in conserned, it is totally independent of the Toyota OEM TPMS, so you have no problem having them working correctly.

Update: Carista works on TMPS readings without subscription! This is huge. I use it WHILE driving. I click on Carista and let it connect. It takes a while, but what am I doing? Oh yeah, driving! You can do other stuff in the meanwhile, audiobooks, IG, PriusChat Then I hit the tire pressure menu and yet another wait, maybe a minute. I LOVE this feature after having it in my Volt. Yes, it is real time and it's also great for making sure Discount Tire did a correct half cross of the tires. Rear to front and front crossed to rear.
