They should just be able to give them to you. If not, I would go work with some other service center, if I were you...

Yes, I am on hold (on the phone) waiting to get the codes. They seemed very puzzled by my request.
I will add the codes to my string of Chat in a second...

I have been referred to a "Toyota Service Specialist" located in CA maybe? 310-468-3114 Lilly. To review my case. My coversation with her has stated that: "The fuel bladder is not underwarrenty. There is no negociations." Hmmm....

Okay I have the "codes" from my 2003 Prius:

    Check Codes...HV ECU=NG

Diag. Trouble Codes ECU:HV_ECU (number of DTCs:1) P3101:Engine system Malfunction

    Coolant temp - 5 C
    Information 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 = 205

    MG1 Torq.....-20Nm (recorded value 0)

    Table 1 Result:
Displayed 1 = System detected an "Out of gas" condition. Explain to the customer and monitor.

    Exclusive info3 = 0

Check for codes stored by the Engine ECM or other ECUs other than P3190/91 = 3101

Check fuel pressure = No pressure = ** replace the fuel tank assembly.

    P3190 - Poor engine power.
P3191 - Engine does not start.
    2004 manual doesn't have a code for P3101

Since the fuel pump is in the tank (at least it is on the 2004), no pressure would most likely be a problem within the tank, assuming the tank is receiving power to feed to the pump. Not sure if the filter is in the tank as well, unreplacable as it is in the 04/05.

So, it doesn't necessarily mean a bladder problem, but if there was no fuel pressure when the engine is told to start, or the fuel pump is manually activated, then there is a problem requiring the tank to be replaced. Only a tank autopsy would determine if it was the bladder causing the problem.

So...could it just be that it ran out of gas and that the computer needs to be reset?

Yes, you could be out of gas. You didn't check/correct that?

But then, the dealer should have added gas, then checked for fuel pressure.

I did not do that nor did the dealer....They seem very excited to spend my $700.00 that the replacement will cost me.

The dealer/service said adding gas will not solve the problem. I need to replace the fuel tank based on the codes. The fuel tank replacement will cost the $700.00 as I stated in another email. I just overall feel very uncomfortable in spending that much money for a FUEL TANK. It is like making me pay for the roof of the car after 55K miles. Silly.

If my car did run out of gas, does the computer need to be reset or something like that?

I believe that your lack of confidence that the dealer has adequately studied your symptoms and diagnostic codes is entirely warranted. Don't cave in without being certain that another solution is not available. The "Service Managers" are a weak link, often knowing far less than technicians, but are unwilling to acknowledge their ignorance. Technicians may know better, but feel that they have an excuse: "The service manual said...." to look no farther than the most profitable answer for them.

just ask them for the codes that they retrieved from the OBD11 scan tool. Tell them you want the codes before any work is started. When you get them, post them here and as a group we'll give you answers to what each code means. These are the codes they used to say the fuel tank was breaking up and that's their reason for telling you you need a new tank. Maybe maybe not.

How did my moniker get in the middle of your email. Here is my two cents: The bladder if the 1st gen has one is part of the emissions control system and I would scream bloody murder. You should request the area tech take a look at it before you pay a dime.

I totally agree. Time to escalate the problem.

I've never had any prior experience with Toyota service but I would hope the area factory service rep would be Prius savvy, would review the situation, and go over the results with you.

Before the meeting, it would be good if you familiarized yourself with the warranty, especially the part dealing with what components are included in the "emissions control" category.

OK, let me see if I get this straight.
Computer spits out 'Engine Failed to Start'.
You admitted, you were low on fuel. Gee, I don't see how an engine could start if you were out of fuel.
I do know the 04/05 WILL generate a specific code 'OUT OF FUEL' if:
    1. Add fuel condition is in force.
    2. Engine produced poor power or won't start error.

I don't know if the classic has a code for 'out of fuel', but it would only cost $2-$5 to find out!
Add 2 or so gallons of fuel, THEN see if there's no pressure. You won't get any pressure if there's no fuel!
Gee, don't these techs have any common sense?
