Canadian pricing finally availlable !

Question: is rust protection a good idea? I almost laughed in the salesman's face when he tried to sell it to me... have I made a huge mistake?

 

Nah I usually find even if you want rust protection, you can get it couple hundred bucks cheaper at places like ziebart (which is whereI'm doing to do the rustproofing in Sept)

 

There's only one rust protection I would consider, and did get on my 2008. Krown. It's the only one the APA recommends, and all the reading I've done over the years seems to confirm this.

Krown is like $100 or $110 or so. IMO virtually any dealer stuff is inferior and over priced. Don't let them fool you about that.

My understanding is that it should have no effect on warranty or car function.

The electronic rust doodads are theoretically somewhat useful, but in practice do not seem to be, and could (possibly) cause issues with electronics.

 

Speaking of the APA, the membership I bought last year to get my no haggle, $1000 off of MSRP deal, has expired.

My wife is looking to buy a 2010 Prius, cause she loves mine so much, and I'd be happier to have only one forum to read for both our cars.

So I'm looking to get a new membership to get the 'APA price'. Somehow I suspect though that the APA price probably won't be much better than the $500 discount from MSRP I've been seeing people discuss here.

I'm in Ottawa area, but would consider a drive to Montreal if I could get another $200 off or so; could combine with a trip to see family. No more Toronto drives for a better car deal for me though... 5-6 hrs each way, compared to 2 hrs or so for Montreal.

I just got my APA price today after submitting my renewal info on Friday. I guess I'm not supposed to reveal my 'confidential APA pricing info' but it's pretty much in line with the expectations I noted above.

I'm not clear yet if the price quoted was for White (Blizzard Pearl). I just noticed on Toyota build & price that this is a $220 premium paint option. My wife has since changed her color choice to Classis Silver Metallic, so it would be nice to get another $200 off or so if they quoted a price with the premium paint option.

EDIT: darn, just spoke with assigned salesman and he claims the quote was for non-premium paint only. So, to some extent the APA or the dealer messed up the quote I guess. Also, they forgot to add a $15 Quebec tire tax, and subtracted $100 for a gas credit I guess applies to Ontario residents only. I suspect these latter two are the fault of the dealer.

So I guess we are only getting about $400 off of MSRP. A bit less considering the cost of APA membership. But IMO some peace of mind not having to haggle, and a little bit of protection if we need to complain to someone (the APA) about subpar service.

My wife wanted the backup camera, but changed her mind when I told her it was part of a $2100 option package. I wonder if the backup camera can be purchased separately and self installed. I know there are other products, but it's be nice to have the integration and presumable reliability of the Toyota camera.

I'm saddened that the $4000 in tax credits I got on my 2008 aren't available anymore. I guess Ontario still has the PST credit, but Quebec stopped the QST credit in January. But we both love the Prius enough that we're still buying, even with current lower gas prices.

Looking to get the 3M Clearshield/Clearbra on the 2010 also. Salesman wasn't sure if it's a new item for the new 2010. My Clearshield was deluxe I guess, covering the front bumper and mirrors and cost $350 at the dealer.

Off to sign papers and put a down payment down tonight... Still excited even if it's my wife's car...

Edited to add: Deal signed. Was told to expect a minimum of 2 week wait; wouldn't be surprised if 3-4 weeks. Should find out in the next few days and will hopefully get a VIN then. Total time at dealer: 1 hour, including politely listening to F&I guy try to sell extras I told him we were convinced we weren't going to buy anyway.

$345 extra for 3M ClearShield; might have to go somewhat custom as there may not be a 2010 Prius version available yet; better check if it's still 3M then. About $29 extra for ashtray; there doesn't seem to be a Toyota cigarette lighter and I think no convenient place to put it anyway.

 

Finally picked up mine today, some picks are posted in the canadian thread. The Illuminated door sills are a real nice touch. Now to purchase a block heater so I can install it myself, and a couple extra additions, thinking I'll attempt to put fog lights in at some point in the near future.

First little while will be taken up getting the paperwork for the PST rebate in before they decide to pull the program.

 

For Alberta buyers, the Country Hills Calgary dealership just gave me a call yesterday to try to beat what I got at Gateway Toyota. His counter-offer was bad relative to my Gateway Toyota agreement, and he wanted me to recind my deal at Gateway to go to Country Hills. This was it:

- $1000 off MSRP
- Free 3M clear hood thing
- $750 VIP Lifetime Oil & Filter OR an additional $200 off MSRP

It sounds like he was willing to go slightly lower, so you can leverage that as you will. He also had a Silver Premium in stock as well, but it was not my preference.

I also saw a (rental) Prius 2010 downtown Calgary today in Winter Grey!

 

I never bought a Toyota before. And I live in Quebec. Not knowing whether Canadian dealers can offer a better price than sticker, I asked around, and I was told that they don't - we have to pay what's posted on their web site - the "official" price. This way there is no competition between dealers. However from what I can read above, that's not the case. Any comment on that?

IMO, dealers can compete all they want. Toyota can not legally tell them how much to sell for. The S in MSRP is only for Suggested. Toyota can only suggest the selling price.

IMO, the problem is that dealers in many areas make informal agreements not to compete. I think that's illegal, but nobody ever gets caught so that doesn't stop them.

I'm in the Gatineau, Quebec area (by Ottawa) and joined the APA ( APA - Welcome ) through the Montreal office last year for $65. That got me about $1000 off of MSRP on my 2008 base (in May 2009). The APA dealer in this area is in Ottawa. I was a bit ticked that the list price dropped about another $1000 or so within a month or so, but that's life...

I just renewed my APA membership and ordered a 2010 base for $405 off of MSRP. No hassle, no haggle, although of course the dealership wanted to sell me various extras at the usual prices. I suspect that haggling could get the price lower, but like many I hate haggling and don't have the time or patience.

Last year I called and emailed local dealers to see if they could beat the APA price, but none of them wanted to try. In bigger cities like Toronto or Montreal I'd guess it might be easier. The other post about $1000 off of MSRP for a 2010 (out West?) had me envious, but not sure if that's for a loaded non-base model.

The 'confidential' APA dealer cost on a 2010 base was listed as $25,990. But I suspect Canadian dealers have other hidden profits like the US holdback, volume incentives etc. To that they add 4% profit margin or $1040, a $65 APA service fee, and then all the other usual costs. I'm sure the dealer makes a decent profit on the $1420 PDI fee too.

As far as I can tell, the APA is about the only reputable discount car buying service in Canada of any decent size.

Has anyone in British Columbia been able to get a significant discount or its equivalent in worthwhile extra value items?

I'm in Victoria which has only one Toyota dealer who also happens to own the nearest dealership outside town. Doesn't make for a competitive environment!

 

Same for me in Quebec. My 2010 Premium cost me 30263 - May 2010 - with these things. Financed at 3.9%.
Paid all my extras separate - will install the EBH later.

 

I have also a dilema, i am considering a prius 2010. Right now Toyota Canada is offering 3000$ rebate if you dont finance the car.....


what to do: here is my 2 options

Our Toyota dealer has a Blue ribbon with misty grey inside Touring brand new that would cost me 30 285 plus taxes instead of 33 285.

Or i found a slightly used 2010 Barceleno REd with Techno Group, 13 000km that was driving by a retired man that change car every year ( i guess he got the new sonata, the car is at a Hyundai dealership. ) for 29 995 with winter tire included....

What would you do? I like blue better and also with the 17 inchs but all the goodies of the red one is really tempting me plus i can also search for a set of used 17 wheels here sometime......

 

If self-financing, like using your house credit margin, go for the used red, 13k km is nothing.

I went with the Toyota financing, bought 60 months, for 3.9%.
My current mortgage is 6% and the marging is +.5%, so it was better for me, five years later, the lower interest.

Think of TCO (total cost of ownership). To get the "New Car" smell back, it's just 100$ - buy new carpets, and keep the previous ones as backups.

 

Consider the cost of the 17", shipping, waiting for the stock ones to be available, TMPS sensors, and tires.
