I spoke with Mike today. After thinking about the Mystery Item and re looking at the CAN View today Mike thinks the data is coming from the Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve. I will differ at this point and let others comment.

All you 06> owners look at this !! You are now "in". Norm has done it again.

Starting from November 2006 there will be 2 fundamentally different CAN-views available:

The V3 is the original designed for the 2004-2005 Prius with the analog MFD.

The V4 is designed for the 2006-2007 Prius which has a digital MFD and so the V4 uses a separate 7" touch screen LCD (that you can buy from a number of Internet retailers). This also makes it flexible enough to adapt in future to other makes and models. (Given the demand)

Neither model will work with the 2001-2002 Prius (Classic) because it does not have a CAN-bus.

V3 works on all package versions of the 2003-2005 Prius.

V3 is currently shipping, V4 will begin shipping mid-November.

Each version comes in an aluminum case and is complete with all necessary custom cables. No wires are cut during installation. The V3 requires 1 (removable) wire-tap for +12v

For more detailed information on each of the types, click on either image below. When you are ready to order, email for a shipping quote. (Rough guide: Airmail within North America ~US$14; outside North America, ~US#30)

Oct 25th,2006 Current status of the V4 CAN-view is that the prototype is working in my car and I am waiting for a few production PCBs to arrive in about 2 weeks. I'm told the VM7000 touch screen LCDs will be available again from www.mini-box.com at roughly that time too.

As soon as I have a production unit built it will go off to a volunteer in California who will report on any problems and how he did the install. I figure neatly mounting the LCD where you can see it and press the screen without moving it will be hardest task. There is only one cable to the OBD2 socket, the VM7000 USB, power and VGA cables plug into the V4, so that part is simpler than the V1, 2 or 3. Better some independent person figures out the install and reports it here, problems and all.

Why not interface directly to the 2006/7 LCD? I agree that would have been preferable, but as the new MFD only has a digital video input (and a composite NTSC input which is a bit blurry if you use it for text all the time) its a question of much it costs to develop a matching digital signal. For the tiny number interested, unfortunately, the answer is too much..

Another part of the reason is that making the V4 again strictly for 1 version of 1 model of 1 manufacturer doesn't make sense given the small number of people interested. Whilst its less convenient, the V4 at least has the possibility of being adapted to Camry and Escape hybrids too, for example.

I designed the V4 to cover plug-in conversion control for 2006/7 where the physical effort in doing the added battery and control install makes the CAN-view part seem negligible. The V4, loaded with relays, is cheaper than its V2 or V3 equivalent, although much more powerful. I am however surprised that a handful of 2006/7 owners are still interested in a V4 without the relay section, despite the LCD inconvenience.

V4 still has 3 microprocessors, but the Video and USB chips are now just factory programmed, so all future updates now go to the single, faster, bigger main chip. No more DIP switches. It also has a crystal timebase for accurate time/distance measurement (V1-3 have possible 1.5% error)

Because of the expanded memory, there is no longer a need to choose which features to download, relay or none-relay version. The V4 has all features of both sets of code and room for more.

The video output will actually drive any VGA-XGA monitor, its the touch-screen USB that has forced me to pick one particular LCD and write a USB host handler for it. Mini-box also have a 10.4" and a motorized 7" from the same manufacturer which probably have the same USB driver. I considered Xantrex, but figured most would be put off by the much higher cost. For what its worth, the VM7000 LCD happens to also have a couple of composite NTSC inputs for cameras etc. There is purportedly a VM7002 which is even cheaper which has no composite inputs (and so fewer messy cables hanging out the back)

The V4 automatically switches the power to the LCD off completely after a user set delay when you turn the car off. Total standby current is less than 2mA, way under existing Prius parked current consumption.

Wait a few weeks and we'll see what the 'guinea-pig' installer has to say

Might I suggest a potential mounting method that may not be simple but should look and function well. Perhaps someone could building a piano style hinge for the extra screen, such the bottom of the screen were aligned with the top of the oem screen housing/visor. The new screen could fold down to cover the oem screen such that when parked it would look like there were no screens. Then while driving it could be flipped up with some amount of adjustment to compensate for glare. I'm not sure how wide the viewing side angle is so perhaps this wouldn't work without a second swivel hinge. Anyway it sounds like fun, can't wait to try one out in an Escape or other non-Prius hybrid!

That is an interesting idea.

If I end up with one, I am considering mounting it on to the front cup holder (which I never have used). That way the screen would lean against the lower part of the dash where it would not be in the way of any controls but would have a firm mount and brace against movement while being used as a touch screen. It would be easily seen and easily reached in that position. Edit: I should say that clamping it to the cup holder seems to me to be needed for this method to work.

im not sure i would want to buy an extra screen only to use it while its covering the main screen. presto has a setup with two screens so maybe a setup like his would be the way to go.

no, no, you misunderstand, it's covering both screens when you are parked, folding like a clam shell, concealing the fact that you've got extra fancy hardware to steal. When you drive you flip up the new screen to reveal both the oem and the new screen one on above the other. .oO( Now dreaming of a multihead computer using them )
it might fold like this: (if fixed width worked properly)
NEW>\ '/ _
OEM> \ \ \ \\

one above the other???

not sure i would want that kind of obstruction blocking what i would have to assume would be a major part of the view of the road. i use my laptop for GPS and i do know that the map not being at a certain position can be tough to look at one and two, can be more susceptible to glare as well.

yup, both visible when the new screen is flipped up, neither when it's flipped down.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DaveinOlyWA @ Oct 27 2006, 08:54 PM) </div>
It was only a potential option that I thought would look slick, be versitile, and function well. Of course, I could be wrong, but I was thinking that the seam along the top of the MFD housing and dash could be used to attach the new screen in a secure manner without drilling any holes in the dash, but then you're back to tearing the dash down for the install. I'm not sure, but I believe that there is some amount of "void" above the oem screen so that if a second screen were placed there it would protrude minimally into the bottom of the view through the windscreen. There are a number of things to consider, I'm probably missing a few:
- the screen should not be to close to the driver or else your eyes have to refocus to much.
- the screen should be somewhere such that you can still see the road in your peripheral vision.
- the screen will need to be close enough to comfortably touch it.
- the screen should be shaded or movable to eliminate or adjust to potential glare,
- the screen should be securly attached, but not in the way of any airbags should they deploy.
The oem screen seems to be in an ideal location, just trying to keep the new one in that area. I'm afraid that using the cup holder or under the stereo is to far away from the window such that if you're looking down there you can't see the road out of the corner of your eye. Which could be a problem since the CAN-View is so darn fun to watch, much more so than the oem screens! I so need to make a movie tour of it opperating in PHEV mode....

I looked at that possibility really hard. I could not figure out how to secure it. I have a SanGuage which is lower than the display would be if it was mounted in the cup holder. I do not find that to be a problem when I am driving. This display must be securely mounted because it will be used as a touch screen. If you can figure a way to secure the screen as you suggest, I would be very interested to learn about it.

I saw a neat way to mount a monitor below the MFD by VinceDee. Check it out.

http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=25891

It seems that this might also work for the monitor that Norm is suggesting. The monitor is firmly attached, but can be removed easily and the radio power button is still accessible.

I saw that. It is really neat. The problem is that the specific monitor which will work with the new CAN-view is not the one used in that example. Norm has said only the VM7000 will have the touch screen capability and it cannot be mounted as shown. That would be ideal if it could be done, in my opinion. It would be more costly if it could be done which might be a problem for some.

I wasn't sure whether the VM7000 would fit or not. I have only seen the pictures on their web site. The monitor has to be separated from the base, but that might be possible. Prehaps Norm can say how completely the monitor can be removed from the base. Otherwise the dimensions of the monitor seem to be compatible with the mounting method described by VinceDee. Do you have any info that says that the dimensions of the monitor are too big even if the base is removed?

I'm glad to hear that the screen does detach from the monitor. Where did you find that info. When I go to the link all that I find is:

...- Includes: Remote control, USB cable, VGA cable, AV cable, Dashboard Mounting bracket, Headrest Mounting bracket + screws, Stylus, CD with touchscreen drivers, Operation manual....

Have you seen the monitor? Does the stand simply unscrew from the monitor so that the monitor package has an overall dimension of 7.1" x 4.7" x 1"?

the whole base comes off the back of the monitor. I just had a look at one and without the base it's just a flat package 1" thick.
