I did exactly what you did and bought this one;

It's cheap insurance. And, it will still be worth that much, if I don't use it. It's like a spare tire or a fire extinguisher. It will have been worth it if they were never used and thrown away after its service life.

Given inflation, the cost of materials and shipping, the cat will likely be worth more in the future.

 

Wow. Interesting I did not know that. I have experienced incompleteness before regarding headlight mounts. (Yes apparently Toyota engineered, for at least the LED headlights that I’m aware, weakened headlight mounts so they’d snap before you damage your expensive LED lights). But you need to find the replacement mounts. parts.toyota.com was incomplete regarding those mounts for me….

 

I assumed the plan was getting the out of state cat installed before inspection.

 

He would be much better off if he installed the non-C.A.R.B. compliant cat after the next smog inspection. Then, he would be complete safe with the cheap cat for nearly two years.

 

Yes, my apologies, my initial wording said that my cat was already stolen but no it's still intact. Just contemplating getting a spare like a spare tire.

I was suggesting that the straight pipe only be used to drive out of state and have an aftermarket cat installed.

it would be pretty dumb to show up to a California based inspection with a straight pipe.

Indeed. I just researched all of this today, at first exuberant that CA had finally approved an aftermarket for Prius.

My senior mom's 2009 Prius had its catalytic converter stolen in February. She had bought it 2.5 years prior, with help from me... for 6k. Because finances have been tight, she didn't think she'd need comprehensive insurance on an older car. We were super naive, and didn't know about catalytic converter locks/shields either.

Now she's without a vehicle, with arthritis in her knees. Used car prices have also sky rocketed by thousands in the past few months, so I haven't been able to find her a replacement (my help is limited, I have some savings but not enough in the current market).

We've had the Prius parked at my sister's for months (maybe even getting chewed on by rodents). Because the estimates we had gotten for the Toyota oem replacement were $3k and higher, which is half what we paid for the whole car or more.

I can't believe the aftermarket is more expensive!!! We had been told months ago, that the Toyota one was around $2200. Which seemed egregious at the time.

It's super depressing, because if I spent that much on the 2009.... what if another expensive part goes out? Like the hybrid battery or the transmission?

I was hoping to get her an easy to fix 2013 Corolla, but prices are literally 2-3k higher than a few months ago on private sales of them!

We're in a lose/lose situation with this.

 

There are some non-CA catalytic converters that are much cheaper. It may be worth a shot.

The cheating software was tied into the steering angle sensor.

WHY not replace your cat with a straight pipe... then put it back on for inspection ?

 

worth noting? Ever wonder why we don't hear of Volt Cat's being stolen? With your Gen1 Chevy volt avatar - the cat (on both Gen1 & Gen2 Volts) is located just after the manifold. Seem nuts? Cat's work only after they heat up - & close to the manifold works to speed up that goal. Then, being in that location deep in the engine compartment, it's nearly impossible to remove it. Skumbab crook would have to jack up the car - remove aero panels underneath - reach up to saw the base ... then not be able to reach the top. Poor dumb crook.

That’s a possible solution, replace the Prius with a Tesla. (Albeit an expensive solution. How many cats can one get with the price of a Model 3? )

 

why don't you have a straight pipe put on, drive out of state, have aftermarket cat installed, drive back ?
