I didn't change my ICE and cabin filter til 65k. At 60k service, the service advisor said that my filters still looked clean. I can change it if I want but if I don't, it's OK too.

The dealer can put dirty one in there. When I was 18 yr I used to work in the service depth. It was Chevy it was bad . This why I like Toyota. Maybe they changed their ways for good. My 2012 prius I did it at 20,000. I had 107,000 still with the same one. I got the Gen 4 a month ago.

65K. That's pretty amazing. And it's great you have an honest mechanic/service advisor.

The dealer wanted to charge me $75 to change the cabin filter on my Camry. I watched a video on YouTube, and even a dummy like me could do it in 5 minutes.

It does prevent debris from getting into the blower unit and associated equipment, so there's that...

Yes, notably the heater core and air conditioning evaporator, neither of which you particularly want to become clogged.

Through most of automotive history, cars got by without HVAC air filters, though.

Had the biggest belly ( and it's large these days) laugh last weekend when the dealer wanted to charge my wife $150 yes you heard me correct, $150 to change her 2016 Prius cabin filter that has 13k miles on the odo. The funny part was they said it was dirty hahaha

So proud of her for saying no. LOL

With the activated charcoal filter, I bet the new one would look "dirty" too.
