CA HOV UPDATED for 2012+ Plug in

They were sold in 2016, but they most likely were 2017 year models; hell some American brands are already touting their 2019's! Nevertheless, since they were not SOLD during the 2018 etc. time frame, they'll lose out, according to what I've read.

Right, they are 2017 Primes, sold in late 2016, and if they have a 2016 HOV Sticker, they are hosed (pending any legislative fixes).

I think you only get three more years, not four. It says they will expire 1/1/2022, so you get 2019/2020/2021 as bonus years. Still better than those of us who only get through the end of 2018.

 

Yes, you are right. 1/1/2022 is technically till the year of 2021, thus.. its just 3 years but not 4 years, from the current tags expiration. Thanks for that correction.

 

HPrimeAdvanced, SlidingBike was able to get the stickers on an older model. The verbiage notes “sticker issued”. I do not think it is model year dependent, nor build date, but when the sticker in question, if any was actually issued. If none was actually issued to a specific car, then even if it was say a 2012 PiP, then it would still qualify for the stickers. If you wait until 2019, the text said just a little while ago that it would expire January 1st of the 4th year, which would be about a year longer than renewing. But I think the lawmakers are still tinkering with the idea......

 

Pretty soon maybe we have a whole bunch of Californians going to MD for used PiP's, like they did when PiP was new in 2012.

 

There was a time when they “ran out” of green stickers, (issued up to the then limit). Later they increased the limit, and then even later switched to unlimited number.

There are used CA vehicles out there that do not have stickers, even some old stock still “New” cars sitting on dealer lots. We loved my wife’s old C-MAX Energi. We have/had been looking at replacements. (They have been getting snatched up, probably because of the updated sticker laws)...

 

I think the cheapest route into the carpool lane now is a 2012 PiP (Base) that never had stickers. Buying it past Jan 2019 saves on additional “depreciation” too.

I bought a used 2012 PiP Advanced 10/2015 and got stickers asap. Had a good run in HOV! In LA it’s like VIP access hahah

 

I was guessing (and telling my wife) that they might faze out the green sticker like they did the yellow, and extend the white stickers only. I was wrong.....

 

Actually, you can buy that vehicle now and apply for stickers right away($22) which gives you to renew them next year for 3 more years.
Even those PiPs bought but never applied for stickers would get the extended HOA from next year.

I too thought so, but the law made it otherwise totally by treating them same(to phase out all white and green and allowing 2017/18 new stickers to have 3 more bonus years)..

I'm thinking of buying a used Plug-In Prius just to get access to the carpool lane until 1/1/2022. I see many plug-ins for sale from 2012-2014 for pretty good prices. A few of them don't have Carpool stickers. Is there a way to verify for sure the car never had stickers? I'd hate to buy a car then find out they had them previously but were removed or in a wreck and never replaced etc...It should be easy if it's a 1 owner car but even then I'm not sure I trust their answers since I'm buying the car for the sole purpose of the stickers until 1/1/2022.

I am thinking the sticker rate was about 85% but I do not know if they could tell you CVRP status.
Some are thinking out-of-state sources I think.

Was so sad when I read that only stickers issued after 17 will be renewed till 22. Will have to look in to options in 2019.

 

The worse part is some brand new Prime owners unknowingly bought Prime as late as March_2018 with dealer applied 2016 stickers, so they get almost zero HOV access.

Because a couple years ago, Ca. passed a law allowing the auto dealers to pre-apply for HOV stickers prior to the sale.
I think they have to know the VIN number so basically when the ship sails they can get the stickers.

(1) If you recently bought a 2017 Prime straggler with 2016 sticker (we have one example here) then you are hosed.
(2) If you bought 2017 Prime in 2017 you could be hosed if the dealer had applied a 2016 sticker on it
(3) If you bought a 2017 Prime in Nov/Dec-2016 (about 2400 sold) with a sticker pre-applied, you are hosed.

So far on Prius Chat we only have one Ca. Prime buyer saying they are hosed, and it is Item (1) above

I have no idea what % of Ca. Primes were sold with dealer applied HOV stickers.

NOTE: About 11,000 Primes were sold in Ca. between Nov_2016 and Dec_2017 assuming approx. 45% of Primes were sold in Ca. (which is recent data we just got from the Ca. New Car Dealers Assoc CNCDA)
