20210610_153332.jpg last week I hit 300,000 on the Prius while driving on the highway I tried to get a good picture of it but it wasn't that great. It currently has 300,204 miles on it now and the engine is still running strong. It still Burns 3.9 quarts every thousand miles, however due to the recommendations on this page and from a Prius mechanic who changed my spark plugs a while back, I know longer wait till the triangle comes on. I check it every time I fill up on gas and add oil accordingly. Looks like I may be needing shocks and struts pretty soon, but as far as the engine goes, it's holding up pretty strong. Whoever placed bets on this car not going to 300,000, you lost. And I'm still waiting on the shirt off of one user's back. LoL

Why on earth would it just lock up on the freeway? And even if it did, the car isn't just gonna stop in place, I'm still going to have momentum to exit the highway, and even if the engine does give out, it will run on hybrid battery at 20mph for at least a mile.

Secondly, this Prius does not spew out oil or even leak any oil. The oil is burned up and exits through the exhaust pipe. I've already changed 2 catalytic converters within the last 4 years or however long I've owned this. Just recently had it inspected, it wouldn't pass emissions, and the coolant control valve was popping a code. after some research, I added a O2 90° extender piece and the P0420 code magically disappeared on its own. I had planned to reset it with my FIXD OBD2 device, but couldn't get the app to work, seems the new FIXD update made it unusable. As far as the Coolant control valve, I replaced it with a new OEM part, (I had replaced this part before with a dorman part, but code never cleared) with the new OEM part on and after topping it off with coolant, the code went away. Got it inspected and it passed. The coolant codes did come back on, but after topping the coolant level off again it went away, and has not come back on on over a month.

Well it is a criminal level of Prius Abuse, but be that as it may? Is it leaving a blue trail of b smoke behind you as you drive? Is there a puff of blue smoke on start up in the morning? Is it leaking, well massive amounts' of oil, when parked?

Well no doubt that is true. But still he is sitting on valuable information?

3.9 quarts is a lot of oil to disappear? Where is it going? The Cat and the 02 sensor have to be fouled? I would think it has a permanent check engine light set?

We still have out 92 Toyota Tercel, sigh it will be on it's forth engine when I get to it. Nother story but it went thru two 3ee, engines (stock) and that puppy was the "King of Oil Burner's!" Bad valve seal stems from the factory ... you could not carry enough oil in the trunk, to keep it alive, It burned it, blue puff on startup and at idle at a red light. Or you know anytime you stopped.

But as bad as it was? It still passed smog in Ca! So smoking, oil sucking pig that it was, it did not foul the cat or the 02 sensor? And that is kinda weird I suppose? But it was "obvious," that something was not right? Can a "Prius," burn this much oil and not smoke like a pig?

    Used engine $600 on ebay

    Catalytic Converter $110 on ebay

Just fix the damn car already. You've wasted more in oil than it would have cost to fix.

You guys need to quit being haters. He has a car he's happy with, more power to him. I love this thread because everyone has dogged him left and right and he and his car are proving everyone wrong at every turn.

From a previous post in this thread, since it seems most don't actually read before posting or have forgotten..

I get new semi-synthetic oil by the case (12qts) for free from a mechanic. Free is a lot cheaper than an engine replacement.

Things don't melt in an engine that has lost oil pressure. Pistons will seize in bores due to thermal expansion of the rings or the piston itself. Bearings will spin on the connecting rod(s) due to friction with the crank, causing the connecting rod to get extremely hot and the rod cap or fastener will typically fail, resulting in the rod releasing from the crank and then being hit by the crank on the next revolution, pushing it into or through the side of the engine block. The only thing that may even give the appearance of melting would be the soft material of a rod or main bearing, but that's not what I would consider "engine melting".

If I remember correctly, a Gen 2 only needs about 4 psi oil pressure at 1200ish rpm and about 20psi at 2400 rpm. Has anyone actually seen documentation as to where the low pressure warning actuates? I don't recall seeing a specific value anywhere in the manual, but I would imagine it's not triggering at zero.

My guess is he has the haters on ignore and cant see the insults. I figured the engine was gonna throw a rod a long time ago. Proved me wrong.

    It's not being "haters".
He keeps waving his flag like he is doing something great........and a lot of us don't agree with that.
YOU need to stop labeling everybody who has a differing opinion as "haters".

Hey guys just checking back with you guys and wanted to let you know that my Prius is now at 309,000 miles and it's still running solid. At least in the last 4 months it seems to have fixed itself or at least to where it's not burning as much. It now goes through about 2 quarts every 3000 miles, which is a lot better than what it used to be where it was burning 3 quarts every thousand miles. At this point I have changed jobs and I no longer have access to free oil. Anyways just thought I'd come on here and update you guys since it's been 9 months since my last post

Do a piston soak with carb cleaner prior to next oil change. That is if you change oil. Sounds like you could do an oil change every couple weeks.

It sounds like you're enjoying the ride... so keep on until it dies or you start to exceed the price of a low mileage used engine with the cost of oil. Nothing wrong with wringing the most out of that engine that you can. It's not like at that mileage the engine would be worth any serious repair costs anyway. If you know anyone with a bore scope, even a cheap amazon one, it would be really interesting to see some pictures of the innards.

Except that he is spitting a crap load of oil out into the environment every time he drives.
And it is possible that the CAT will fill up with oil and catch fire.

Other than that, no problem.

I really doubt the cat will catch on fire...lol. As much oil that has gone through that cat has coated the substrate to the degree there is likely no catalytic reaction to heat up the cat anymore. But whatever sam

I agree with SamSpade about the massive amount of air pollution you're spewing. If our society wasn't a suicidal death cult when it comes to climate change you'd of had no way to renew your vehicle registration once you hit 1 quart burned per 1000K miles.

But I disagree with Sam Spade 2 saying you'll set the cat on fire... In truth you're going to blowout the flange gasket between the exhaust header and where it connects to the cat because your cat is barely able to let exhaust gasses pass through it due to it being fouled. Once you blow that gasket and keep driving it (which seems like you will) you'll fill your engine compartment up with high temperature exhaust fumes that will, among other things, blow out your valve cover gasket. Or at least that's been my experience with what happened to negligent vehicle owner's like yourself who thought driving a broken down vehicle was ok.

And the real kicker is you could buy a low mileage Gen2 engine for less than $1K and you and your buddy could swap engines in 6 to 8 hours:

So the car is now burning 2 quarts every 3000 miles. Toyota threshold for "a problem" is burning 1 quart every 600 miles, or 5 quarts every 3000 miles.

His car .....2 quarts and improving
    Toyota spec.....5 quarts

and he's getting ragged on as if he's causing the end of the world .......crazy.....
