Burning 3.9qts every 1000 miles

    I'm still thinking oil is being pulled through the PCV system. The underside of the valve cover should have a large baffle (piece of sheet metal) that blocks a direct path to the pcv fitting. Wondering if this baffle is missing. An oil catch can would provide an answer to that question.

    Matt's previous post about running dry and knocking may make it a moot point.

    I have changed the OCV valve, president seem to make no difference. Im gonna look in more on the PVC system, and as far as this car being a death trap, it has been this way since I bought the car almost 3-4 years ago. This car has only left me stranded once in all these years, and that's because the inverter coolant pump went out, and this forum helped me find the solution and even got me in contact with someone who made the repair. Love this Forum

    Okay so these are all the codes that popped up. I took the fuel injectors, coil packs, spark plugs, throttle body, and all the air hoses and MAF sensor and cleaned the crap out of them all. One of the fuel injectors had a broken O ring as well so I ran up to o'reilly's and bought a new o ring and put everything back together and by golly the engine sounds and feels 10x better and is so quiet and purrs like a kitty. I reset the codes, I'm sure a few will pop back up related to the coolant stuck (which I changed the part) and I expect the CAT code to pop back up, but overall cleaning the air hoses and fuel injectors and sensors made a huge difference. I'm really shocked on how smooth it rides now. I bought a new thermostat, but that's for another day.

    Currently these are the only two codes that have came back up since I cleaned all the parts. I changed the spark plugs and the coil packs last year. I have also changed this part less than 6 months ago. I might change it again as this code keeps popping up with the coolant control stuck. I do know my heater doesn't blow as hot as it should.     And so.......how much oil does it burn / lose now ??
    About the same, I bet.

    AND......driving a car with that many problems ON THE HIGHWAY is not a smart thing to do.
    It just isn't.

    All right, so I just had the sparks plugs and coil packs replaced as well. All of the spark plugs were drowned in oil, and two of the coil packs were broken, as well as a broken O ring on one of the injectors. reset the codes and have drove 566.8 miles and everything runs a whole lot smoother now, also getting better gas mileage. I have checked the oil and surprisingly it isn't low yet??? Current miles are 295,592. See you in the 300k club, then off to the 350k and 400k club. This engine is strong and built stronger than all of your other Prius engines.

    If all that oil was in the spark plug wells on the porcelain side of the spark plug before you removed them, you have a leaking gasket on the valve cover. You will need to replace that gasket (or have it replaced) otherwise you will just foul the coils again.

    Did you clean out all the oil in the spark plug wells before changing the spark plugs?

    Yes the spark plug Wells have all been cleaned out. I believe the excessive oil in the wells was caused by me not using a funnel when adding oil. Going forward I will be using a funnel and will check the spark plugs and coils in a month

    You can repeat that over and over a hundred times and it won't make it any less a case of just pure dumb luck.
    You already have a good head start on the 100.

    I hope it doesn't decide to lock up on the freeway so that you DIE as a testament to how unwise this little adventure really is.
    Not to mention how irresponsible it is to be spewing out that much oil onto the roads.

    I wonder how many of us have managed to survive engine "lockups" or stalls or fuel starvation or other failures on cars in motion on the highway, so many times.

    Passenger car engines are nowhere near the reliability levels of commercial aviation power plants. Sudden failures to propel are quite common, vastly exceeding the known highway death rate.

    And even then, a large majority of the deaths are the result of other driver misconduct, not from some sort of mechanical failure.
