Point of clarification, this website isn't a newsgroup. And the restrictions on commercial activity on Usenet (newsgroups) predates the Internet by quite a long time. Those restrictions were in place to prevent 1) the groups being overrun by advertising, 2) conserve the precious bandwidth needed to transmit messages. Remember, most Usenet postings usually travelled via UUCP via dial-up connections from one site to another, unless you were at a big site (like UC Berkeley) which had an ARPANET connection.

And another point of clarification: The ARPANET existed long before Gore became a senator. What Gore did was introduce legislation that created the National Supercomputer Centers and the NSFnet that linked various research institutions and related businesses with those centers. The NSFnet was the first "internet" (linking of various other networks together to make a bigger network), and is the basis for the Internet we have today.

There's a part of me that feels that the explosive growth of the Internet is at least partially responsible for Microsoft becoming the 9,000 pound gorilla that is today. However, I don't think Microsoft would have ever been able to get a monopoly on the exchange of information via computer. Usenet (newsgroups) and BBS' existed long before Microsoft did.

Yes, I have spent way too much time on the Internet in it's various incarnations over the past 20 or so years.
