BT Tech Stiffening plate

Hmmm... interesting idea. I was thinking about getting a second one and using two for wind chimes.... Presto, am I correct in my understanding that when the TOM'S rear suspension brace goes on, the OEM plate goes off? If I am correct, then I am almost halfway there on my wind chime concept (this Thursday will be the magic day).

Does anybody know what note the BT Plate sounds when you strike one that's hanging? Brian - can you confirm whether it sounds a pure note or a disorganized "clunk". Also, is there any consistancy between different samples.

I have my BT plate next to my computer (It helps for driving games). I just looped an elastic through one of the holes. It's a clear, deep note, like a bell. It'd make a good wind chime in hurricane-force winds

 

You can use it to stiffen your pillows, it is 10,000 times stiffer then the average pillow, there are tests to prove it. Good for a gift to the mother in law.

Tool organizer is another good idea as well. Depending on the sound that is made "stock" (unmodified), some tuning can be done by varying the length of the two pieces.

Or, perhaps it could be used as a headrest - kind of like the "headrest" in the 1800s that was used to preserve the elaborate 'dos of the day.... But it would be a good cure for the mother-in-law's visits if that was all that was available for pillows.... Until she brought her own pillow; then you might in for an even longer visit....

 

Just keeping the thread going - my plate hasn't arrived from Brian just yet - but what about using the stock plate as a mono snow shoe - just a suggestion.

That is an interesting idea. You could get a second OEM plate for the second snowshoe.... I am sure that someone who has replaced their OEM plate would be willing to give you their OEM plate.

 

Wouldn't do me a lot of good - we hardly ever get snow here in the UK.
Guess I will have to offer it on eBay as a part of the Millennium Falcon or something similar - its bound to sell well to a non Prius owner.

On a slightly different subject...

A while ago, this picture was posted, showing a BT plate that had been removed after --I don't remember-- let's say a few years of service.

The wear in the area of the attachment bolts is fairly obvious, and that one washer even looks a bit deformed...wondering what if any conclusions we came to (I wasn't able to locate where/when this came up originally).

I have one on my car and am satisfied with it, but am still curious about long term durability issues.

Well, this kinda proves that the BT plate does, indeed, undergo some stress in its position (I recall that being one of the objections raised, that there was nothing for it to do but just hang around down there... like that's a bad thing).

 

The holes in the plates attachment area look liked the bolts had been tightened way too much. I'm pretty sure mine didn't have any bolt indents like that when I removed it. I'll give a quick check when I get home. The plate is still on my floor somewhere.

 

Excellent question Pinto Girl !! I also looked for that thread, and I remember the photo, but I don't remember the final answer, if there was one. I wonder if there are any long term examinations of how the Plate wears over time.... hmmmmmm....... B)

 

The picture that you posted shows a well worn BT Tech plate with normal use. As far as long term durability, I think you can rest easy. According to my calculations, there are over 24 MILLION miles of use with our plate on practially all continents with not one failure. I would say that this is a pretty good track record....

CNC machined 6061-T6 billet aluminum and hard coat mil spec annodizing tends to last a VERY long time!!

The holes are barely worn. They are a bit dirty, but there is very little wear to the annodization. One of the holes has a small fleck of bare metal. It was installed for 14 months. I don't think there's anyone here that drives as hard as I do. I think I'm a good candidate for durability . I really think the other picture shows over-torquing of the bolts. I should add this pic to my BT Plate Removed thread.

 

Presto, how many miles did you put on your Prius in those 14 months? Also, was your car subject to road salt or any other roadside contaminents?

That had to been at least 50,000km (31,000 mi). There were only a few days I had to drive through salty slush, but I washed the undercarriage right after the roads cleared up.
