Brakes, Gas Pedals, Re-calls, Facts and Myth's

These are man-made products. They are not divinely crafted. They will have issues. Refer to my post earlier in this thread about the recalls. Every major maker including Honda and Nissan which I left off for space will have at least 300,000 to 500,000 recalls every single year. Without fail.

On my 2005 there has been two major safety issues, 'stalling' and a needed steering reinforcement. In addition it's currently subject to the bogus floormat / pedal gap recall from November ( non-safety because the scenario where it might occur and cause a hazard is impossible to happen ).

The Gen 2 Prius has been and continues to be the top-rated most reliable and most dependable family-sized vehicle in CR's, JD Powers' and True Delta's rankings. Even with all those issues??? Yes even with all those issues.

The customer satisfaction reflashing of the Gen 3's will be done soon and this dustup will pass into vague misty memory for the huge number of satisfied owners who like me have never experienced any such issue. For those looking to be disappointed. for those pretending to be horrified owners, for those uber-sensitive to any and all deficiencies, well these will likely move on and this issue too will pass into vague misty memory. Life moves on.

 

Yes, a problem since 2004 that's being brought to light only because of the surrounding recall issues. The distractors of this forum are sounding like crybabies.

 

You missed the whole point. We don't mind a recall, give us a recall and we will quiet down. The problem is Toyota doesn't want to give us a recall. The slow action is the one that make all the noise. I understand your standing Phish, but please do pass our noise to you superior and get them do what good for all of us.

 

Better quiet down now as it's officially recalled.

 

I wish I can quit all those discussion soon, but its still not formally announce by Toyota. Let wait and see.

 

You misunderstand the situation.

Everything in business is a negotiation. Everything.

So who's negotiating? Toyota and NHTSA are. The solution is known already since they've already applied it to new production. Now it's just a matter of what the NHTSA and Toyota want the announcement to say. When a company makes a preliminary announcement such as this or such as a takeover .... with the official announcement later in the week ... that only means that the wording is being finalized and negotiated.

We can reproduce the brake issue daily in my wifes Prius. You are driving 20 mph, apply the brakes, hit a bump, lose the brakes for a second, therefore traveling farther to stop the car.

You do the math.

Good enough?

 

While I agree that cover-up and spin are happening, I don't agree about when it started or who started it.

From my perspective, it began before I was old enough to drive (decades ago), and before Toyota was a significant player in the North American auto market. Toyota is being called to the carpet for something that has been accepted SOP for the entire auto market for my entire life.

Is the rest of the industry going to be held to the same standard? If not, then this reeks of hysteria.

 

At the moment it is massive hysteria being used as a news filler before the Olympics on Friday.

1. Ford is getting a pass ( thus far ) on its hybrid braking issue.
2. GM is getting a pass ( thus far ) on the 5 y.o. Cobalt PS loss issue which is ten times greater.

That should put this Toyota Prius dustup in perspective.

 

According to reports, the brake defect has been associated with several accidents in Japan (btw, it's now officially a defect; according to the NY Times this morning, Toyota is recalling 436,000 2010 Priuses and other hybrids). It's possibly true that none of the accidents has been officially attributed to the brakes, since the reporting here in the U.S. that I've seen does not go to that level of detail. But it is a stretch to call them a "myth."

FYI, I had a 2006 Prius for 3-1/2 years, 96k miles, never noticed any brake issues. The Gen III Prius brakes are completely redesigned, and the Gen I and Gen II Priuses are not part of the recall. I say this because a number of folks on this forum have stated that they've been living with brake "characteristics" on pre-2010 Priuses for years. Those anecdotes, too, are irrelevant.

I work in software, and I well understand the tuning of algorithms that govern system behavior. Better algorithms come along all the time, and Toyota needs to get on with it, as, apparently, they now have.

 

OK, this would be my last post on the issue. Since:

We finally got what we need. Problem on other motor companies have nothing to do me so I don't think I want to waste my energy on them. Thank you for all that voiced to earn our recall. Thanks again.
