It'll especially be a success if enough buyers decide they don't need seating for 5 - the troubling thing, for some. Still - the notion of a manufacturer settling for just keeping existing customers . . . doesn't that kind of sound like putting a tourniquet on profuse bleeding - as opposed to being the one whose causing the other guy to do the bleeding?

Let's not overlook GM's choice to not target mainstream buyers with Volt, twice.

It took years for them to admit the audience miss. But then to repeat the mistake...

Yes, it's sickening. My two rear endeds were people not paying attention in rush hour traffic. My '04 had a little over 197,000 miles and I was looking forward to rolling over 200,000 when I was stopped in traffic and a guy hits me at about 40 mph. Said his brakes failed, yet the cop let him drive away. The C, I was going about 10 and slowing for a traffic jam when a pickup hit me at about 60 mph or more. Not much left to the car, surprised I wasn't seriously injured.

The wife's C was going along at 35 when an oncoming car made a left turn in front of her but hit her head on. No way to avoid it. She broke her sternum - probably from the seatbelt. Two years later she still has issues with her neck and back. The kid had no insurance in effect though he had a card so the cop didn't give him an extra ticket. We're still paying the medical bills and paying for cars we didn't plan on.

I honestly believe these cars saved our lives. As long as Toyota builds cars like the Prius, I'm a customer. One reason I want a Prime, is to get out of a car I was forced to buy for a need and to get a car I want. I'm reminded of it every time I get in it, and I'm not too thrilled with the 3rd gens anyway....

it takes a lot more time, money and effort to get a new customer, than to retain a current one. too many business's lose sight of that fact, and end up swimming against the tide.
sure, you want to focus on new business, but not at the expense of current.

Low hanging fruit... A unique product with a $7,500 tax-credit is a very different situation.

Of course, we aren't really talking about retention anyway. It's getting traditional buyers to stop buying traditional vehicles.

I can't believe a manufacturer gives a rip if my prior car is an ev, a phev, a hev or a guzzling hemi. They want sales where ever they can get 'em. Sure - I care, & you care if traditional car owners switch ... but dealerships? Not so much.

Not reducing their production of traditional vehicles is a very big deal... hence needing to switch to something with an electric motor... fleet consumption & emissions.

therein lies the huge quandary for traditional auto manufacturers .... keep the high-profit pickups & SUVs churning out. Big oil loves big users of their products too. It's almost schizophrenic if you think about it too long.

that's why they need a little encouragement, because consumers don't care either. so we have a country where half the people believe in mmcc, but won't change their habits accordingly.

IMHO, the hypersensitivity to political references should be suspended for the holidays. BUT I am not a moderator (nor pretensions). Not my 'hyob'.
