The Volt and Bolt strike me as compliance vehicles and tax havens.
As mentioned above, ZEV/CAFE credits might make these vehicles vehicles more of a value adder for the brand than one might imagine.
Also.....since dot.gov is dolling out kickbacks on the consumer end of the product line, do we have any data about kickbacks on the supply end?

Perhaps more important is pure, old fashioned R/D.
GM is a player in the 'lectro-car world, whether people want to acknowledge it in a Prius forum or not.

If oil prices spike, GM can ramp up production of the Bolt/Volt very quickly to MEET those market demands....but for right now, at-pump prices and other market factors are keeping buyers out of the eco-car section of the auto-malls.

GM did experiment with EVs in the past.

i haven't seen anything negative about gm being a 'player', and this is not exclusively a prius forum (check the header)
the question is simply one of volume.

We know a couple who traded their 3 series BMWs for a pair of Bolts. The price is in the same category, and the cars meet their needs. Hardly a compliance econobox.

I see more Tesla's in our area and mostly older Volts and have only seen two Leafs and only one Prime. Regular Prii are not even common and the dealers are not stocked up with them, I'm talking Gen 4.
A 100 mile range would get me to most places 99% of the time. No big deal if you have a second car.

I don't think it's a true compliance car, but yes, currently at that volume they have to be losing money on them.

deliveries to start in april, do you have any sales figures?

edit: 1,500 so far and 5,000. forecast. not too bad, and a big reason chevy may increase production, according to inside ev's.

apparently, south korea has very high bev incentives, maybe making it profitable to sell there?

I'm sure when they come out, they'll be posted. Don't forget, GM posts quarterly.

The launch of Jaguar’s I-Pace marks the start of a new, post-Tesla phase in the era of the modern electric vehicles.

While Tesla deserves credit for kick-starting the modern electric-vehicle revolution; now it’s time for the longer established automakers to pick up the EV ball. And first to market, beating the German luxury automakers to the punch, is Jaguar with its I-Pace.
    . . .

A hundred years ago, Jack Johnson defeated every white fighter that came up. There was an effort to find the "great white hope" which is how I see the I-Pace vs Tesla.

Based upon the poor performance of the various 'Prius killers,' the pattern has been they will get one or two things right BUT fail in the overall. To beat the Prius, the designers, engineers, and management have to be dedicated to the Prius goals, not a "we're not Prius" attitude. So I am expecting the I-Pace to have some significant technical flaws or an even worse production record.

The problem with all the legacy automakers is that they are just shoehorning an electric drivetrain in an ICEer. Tesla was built from the ground up to be electric (as well as the safest car in the world). It's VERY different engineering.

Even if they get the I-Pace right, it will still be lacking the Supercharger network, or equivalent well supported fast DC charging one.

that is one huge "even if". But even so - there is a huge foreseeable upside. The Jaguars' infamous lack of reliability.

But BEVs are much more reliable than ICE cars. In fact, most of the issues in the i3 involve the ICE range extender.
