Not as much apples and oranges as you might think. You may be missing the point that they are looking at the diesel BMW. The Lexus (other than the 250h), Audi (other than real high $$$ cars) and Infiniti don't offer smaller sporting sedans that get 35 mpg on the highway. The 335d is a good choice for a compromise for good milage and a sporting ride.

Of course, I meant apples vs. oranges comparing a BMW 335d vs Prius, so maybe you're the one who missed the point.

When taking into consideration luxury cars, the new lexus HS hybrid is a lot cheaper, with much better combined FE, and a LOT more reliable compared to BMW 335d.

The Lexus HS hybrid would also offer less compromise in power when compared to the new Prius.

The gap in power and luxury between the new Prius and BMW 335d is huge, so yes, they are apples and oranges.

If the 220d or the Forester/Outback diesel came out, I would jump on it.

I need to get a bigger car to replace my s2000 for my baby next spring. Too bad they are not sold here in the US. I don't need that much power (or want to pay) for the 335d.

It would be great to have one of those two diesel to suppliment my wife's prius.

Watch Suzuki or MB for possible diesels in the near future. I don't know about the U.S. but in Canada, there's a good chance we'll see a 4 cylinder diesel C-Class, B-Class and GLK-Class. Bluetec of course, not the CDI.

I don't think so. If the subset of cars this person is interested in is the BMW 335d and the Prius then they all become apples.

Almost 30 years ago I had a salesperson question me when he asked what else I was comparing his Audi Quatro Coupe to. I said a Volvo Turbo Wagon and a BMW 320i. He said there is nothing similar about any of these cars, how can I compare them? I said I like them all. Each had strengths and weaknesses in what I was looking for, but bottom line is I would own any of the three and be happy.

If R&T or Car and Driver compares them for their various testa then you might cry foul and say it's apples and oranges. But if I like them both then they become apples to me.

I was in a similar situation..comparing 2010 Prius, Jetta Sportwagen TDI, upcoming Audi A3 Tdi, used Lexus 400h, or waiting for diesel Saab 9-3x. While it was really apples to oranges, they all had pros and cons for my requirements. So I had to prioritize and rate passenger/storage space (prefer hatch or wagon); gas mileage, interior finish, exterior appearance, technology/bells/whistles, reliability, and cost across all cars. Obviously some did high in some areas, but low in others. The Prius was the choice for me...though it's curious how many people seem to know how it WON'T fit my requirements...even when they have never sat in or drove one, and don't really know what my requirements are. To each his/her own I guess...and I have learned not to say too much as then you are considered "smug" regarding your purchase. Can't win.

Yea, once you own it, you just need to be satisfied knowing it's the right car for you. Trying to explain it to your friends is useless.

My choice was between a subaru outback and a prius. The only comparable thing about these two cars, and the reason why I was interested in both was the hatchback/wagon and decent space. In the end I choose the P because there were more pluses.

    .

My daughter likes both, oranges and apples. But, somehow, sometimes she wants one over the other. Mistery!

My father like both too, so they must be apples! He wishes they were, as his doctor banned oranges from his diet due to a acid reflux problem.
