    I used this as a guide when I did mine. It's not exactly the same engine so in some respects the Prius engine is easier to work on. Also a repair manual is the best place to start with any job you've not done before. Take a look. If you click the 'Watch on YouTube" link, it will work.

    Hey Mendel, I found it helpful. It's long but each step is about 10 seconds. He doesn't dwell on anything simple.

    So after running abt 14k miles, engine has loud knock sound now. i dont how it started but once i started noticing it abt couple of months ago on my way back from work on highway, i ran into slow traffic and whenever traffic moved fast i push gas and heard knocking but when i opened side window to hear i didnt hear the knock. it was like that for couple of weeks and then i started hearing slow knock all the time and sometimes it went away. but lately it became louder and sometimes sound like if the exhaust has leak and thats what this sound is, but im sure its coming from enginer and it is louder now. still no codes or anything. engine still has same power. where should i start looking? any advise?

    Would you please answer the proper way of installing the rod bearings. All motors up to now that I have worked on had notches which locked them into place. The Prius has no notches to lock the rod bearings in place. Do they use a type of adhesive on the back side of the rod bearing during install?

    the enigne is so unpopular/(does not normally fail) that there should be one sitting on a shelf at a yard within 100 miles (unless you are really out back) -
    i got one years ago (2nd gen) for around $300 ..

    .. after extensive calling around for replacement quotes person, (and many mechanics didn't want to touch it because of 'high voltage' -
    so they jack the price up beyond reason) we had never changed a prius engine spent about 2 weeks (maybe ~40 man hrs and replaced it, (and thanks to a lot of consultation from 3prongedPaul and a couple others,

    i had shipped to a mechanic shop for minimal$

    at that time, the prius engine was not worth the time and trouble to rebuild, i'm not sure about these days in comparison.

    After successfully installing a 4th Gen motor in my 2012 prius V the old engine is going to be rebuilt using info from this thread, thank you very much for all the information, makes for a great read :).

    Old motor has blown head gasket, no bent rods as far as I know, oil rings issue for sure as the motor was going through a quart of oil every 800 miles. The rebuilt motor will find its home in my 2010 Prius hatch, current motor in the hatch has 250k miles on it, burns about a quart every 1500 miles, no coolant consumption so far but its only a matter of time I guess :/.

    I do intend to, just waiting for an engine stand to come in so I can start the process; may be even a video series. I suck at editing etc so it'd be patchy at best.

    Just keep the camera steady (tripod or mini tripod) and talk only when you need to. Its ok to have pauses in a video as long as there is motion going on. Make sure the sound is good. You will be fine!

    Hey guys,

    I also have a head gasket problem and am trying to buy some time before I get it replaced as this is the only car we have available at the moment. To my understanding it would make sense to depressurize the cooling system after shut down to prevent coolant from getting into cylinders when the car is sitting. Has anyone tried this?

    That would be pretty cool.

    And none of that portrait orientation for video. You can't see anything except sky and ground. When it feels like I'm peeping with one eye through a vertical slot in a wooden fence, I move on. Our eyes are side by side for wide angle, not stacked vertically for tunnel vision. Rant off. ;)

    Seriously, a video would be great. Editing isn't such a big deal.

    I'm at the same crossroads with the gen 3 1.8 with 270 and some change I had it apart having a head gasket fixed and the mechanic put it back together with what I believe is a hole in the top of the piston a young kid from the Toyota dealership. So rather than having more mistakes made I think it's best to get a JDM engine and transmission with the super low miles that they generally can have never been touched by anybody here we should be good for a good minute by the time I pay for all the head gaskets and the sealers and everything else and all the parts and you know I'll have easily the $1,100 that I'm getting the motor for and $250 for a transmission same mileage and what not it just makes good sense The car's in beautiful shape otherwise

    I have done the Head Gasket and it sucks.
    Way better off with motor and trani.
    Plus easier.
    Now maybe if the engine had less miles and didn't burn oil....
    But if your going to keep the car the jdm or rebuild it yourself is the best way to go.

    Yeah on another thread somebody sold the 4th gen Prius to this guy Rob in Orlando with around $175,000 on it and did just that when they sold it to him so he didn't know the head gasket was blown
