Will sure check back with dealership on FIPG.

im attaching some head and block pictures, there was plenty of fluid invasion in motor. I dont know how to evaluate what i see in pictures. Does it look fully destroyed? Or can it be easily cleaned restored?
The head gasket was fully covered with water and leak was very very significant.

    That's pretty nasty. :(

My first thought is machine shop for the head, but I suspect that's not in the cards?

    Definitely gunk in the oil.

#1 cylinder piston definitely cleaner than the rest.

I wonder if you crank the engine by hand if the pistons all come up to the same Top Dead Center. Good to check, to verify you don't have a bent piston arm.

Is the intake side on the left? Some evidence of gasket sealer (flagged)? The valves look pretty bad, and no two cylinders the same.

I never used gasket sealer. I have owned this since 70k miles and never used gasket sealer. At70k miles i dnt think previous owner wud have had gasket leak issues

Need to decide budget. How much are you willing to put into this.

1 Need to carefully clean head and block
2 need to check for warpage on both.

Budget and straightness will decide if it is salvageable.

Can get set of valves for $75 have to check with machine shop how much they will charge for seat cutting and head servicing. Mind you can get head altogether for under $500.

I just did this not too long ago on mine pm me if you wanna know what I would have done different.

Without seeing all the pistons down so I can see the cylinder walls and without checking for warpage. Looks like you should check more.

I would at least see of all the pistons are even at there top of stroke. Now you could use a disk gauge to check on u. Need to see if those connecting rods are bent.

How often did you change the oil in this engine? That valvetrain looks nasty.

If there was significant coolant intrusion, you may have bearing wear and possibly bent rods from combustion of the coolant. How long was the engine driven with a blown head gasket?

I think a used engine is the best option here...or at least a new short block with machine shop inspection of the existing cylinder head.

I have always religiously used mobil 1 every 10k or lower. Never skipped on oil changes or went over 10k.
I cranked it to check all cylinders are coming up to the top at same height i didnt notice any difference.
Used couple of cans of brake cleaner to blow off that carbon on top and had some success, dnt wanna touch the surface with any scrubbing material.

If i fix head gasket and clean egr cooler , im keeping it for another 100k and then get rid of it. Only reason keeping for another 100k more is because after putting so much effort and time i dnt wanna just throw it away.

Don't conflate engine woes and hybrid.

Yeah it might be, since the 3rd gen EGR was introduced at least in part to improve mpg? Ditto for the low-friction oil rings, light-weight pistons, or whatever it is that's causing them to coke up.

But I don't see it as direct correlation, that hybrids kill engines.

Hybrid for the reason of costly traction battery, cost to replace is awful and again amount of time n effort to refurbish them is still not worth it in my opinion. I have been clearing hybrid battery code and running it like that for over 1k miles now. Refurbishing hybris battery is next project and im not looking foraward to it

That's the only reason I keep mine. I haven't done the motor but almost everything else.
What is the condition of your traction battery?

I tried all that recharging stuff.... I bought a new battery for $1600 and never thought about it again.

pardon my ignorance but what is that? lol
should i be worried about any rings? thhis is just brake parts cleaner, cant it be flushed with engine oil? since i plan to put oil after button up and drive for abt 20 miles and flush it.

edit: i googled piston rings, that carbon is sitting on top of cylinder anyways, it wud had gone into piston rings if i didnt clean it anyways?
or is brake cleaner death for that material?

im not shelling $1600 for traction battery, no way. i rather sell it to junkyard than putting that much money in it. At 231k miles it not worth it to me spending $1600

I think you're doing ok, having shop towels stuffed in the oil/coolant passageways, and cleaning the pistons. Just don't go nuts with liquids I guess. And use some form of compressed air to blow particles away. Even a shop vac on blow.

Brass bristle brush would be good I think.
