Not sure what that has to do with the torquing procedure I discussed.

If you're suggesting that by the time you get to the head bolts to do this procedure, you're already a long way towards a head gasket replacement, and you may as well ..., then sure, that's a definite consideration.(y) And myself, I'd probably not bother just "retorquing," and would do the whole HG job if ever needed, which BTW looks pretty simple and straightforward on these cars. One thing about the video of the guys working on the car with piles of dirt everywhere - it sure makes one think ... wow, if *these* guys can do it ...

Sorry, that statement was intended to address the idea of periodic head bolt re-torquing. It really isn’t realistic on this particular engine design.

The head gasket job done by those guys may work but with the way that the timing cover was resealed, that engine will definitely seep oil.

No it really isn't realistic. It would be a long shot to keep head gasket from blowing out causing hydrolock which bends the rods causing full engine rebuild.

There would be no guarantee the gasket wouldn't blow anyway.

Retorquing the head bolts without any evident problems, maybe akin to having a mastectomy without cancer?

If these bolts are having a stretching problem then no it would be more like takeing a vaccine.

There are engines that the procedure for torqueing is to drive it so many miles and then re-torque head. If you don't on those engines the exact same thing happens cross flow happens.

In the repair manual they to emphasize measuring the bolts. This is where I started to remember about some engine need 2ND torque and stretching of bolts from automotive school

But I wonder if re-torque had to do with type of head gasket. Darn it's been along time since I had to deal with heads

So I am currently in the middle of a head gasket replacement. First time ever doing one. I am using a popular walk through video on YouTube but have some questions.

In the video they used no sealant for the head gasket but the Prius manual calls for it. I have seen multiple places now where people replace with no sealant at all. What do I do?

IIRC it's only the copper headgaskets that need a sealant. The modern laminated steel headgaskets do not need it.

Where in the Prius manual, which manual?

Take a look at the attachment: there's small amounts of "seal packing":

Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent

applied just at the end where the timing chain cover goes on.

A screen-grab from the attachment (Repair Manual excerpt):

I used Indian Head on mine, just as a precaution. But my Haynes manual says to install the gasket dry.

@danlatu uses a spray on the gasket, back here:

    Blown Head gasket rebuild....@297k | Page 3 | PriusChat

    Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket

    Just watching this:

Bottom line in the above: that additional coating is not really useful for new head gasket, more useful for a reused gasket with failing coating, and it's best to clean the coating off completely, then apply the spray.

Oops last reply was an accident. Still new here.

I appreciate the advice! Just got the head back on and realized I have a piece I’m not sure where it goes.... it must have fallen out in transport somewhere? Can anyone tell me what it is or where it goes?

You do not need the copper spray, but you do need to apply fipg (or equivalent) underneath the headgasket in the specified areas. This is to prevent external seepage.

No I have all the valve caps and the two guide pins on the block were in place. It is hollow straight through.

I’m totally lost as to where it could go!

Okay I figured it out... Whew. It is a spacer for the fuel rail! I just completely forgot since the tear down was so spaced out. Thanks for the help everybody!
