    Ok that's good to know I will perform the entire manifold and EGR cleaning before I go any farther in the engine and put it back together and gave it a try, hopefully I don't have to do any Head work

    Since your head gasket is probably blown, a couple of members here have used k seal to buy some time.

    Hi danlatu,
    I'm going to do the Head gasket, just to be safe, is there any special tools for the head gasket job? Or anything special that I need to know about, I have replaced timen belts on vw Jetta and Honda's and always worked on my own cars, so I have a good idea on where to start but any help before the project will be nice,
    I will like to do the entire engine because it is burning oil but my knowledge is not all there for the entire job so head gasket should be ok for now thanks.

    If you want another opinion, @leeb18c did a head gasket replacement while the block remained in the Prius ;).

    You will need a set of external torx sockets, i used zip ties to hold up the ac compressor, pull the passenger side wheel off and remove the timing chain cover and engine mount, you can use the ac compressor bolts to pull the pulley. The timing chain cover is going to be a pain to pull off. I left the entire manifold connected and just removed the studs to pull the head off. Make sure the cams and piston are tdc (top dead center) and mark the chain with white paint marker and the cam sprockets, if you are off one tooth, it will run like crap. I used grey rtv on reassembly, new head bolts new head gasket and I would replace the valve seals while you have it apart.

    Hey danlatu, did you by any chance still have the information on the head bolts -timen cover sequence for loosing and torque the bolts?

    Hey guys,
    I when over all of this conversations and specially to all of danlatu information on his engine rebuild thanks for all the pictures,
    danlatu I know my engine is burning oil and I'm the same way is you are, I prefer to get new piston rings, and don't take chances with a used engine, so i started to remove everything to do the head job, but instead I will be removing the whole engine and installed new rings I'm very confident on doing it my self, I Will inform of any new updates with my engine job,
    Danlatu did you honed the cylinders using the normal tool to do this job? And did you have to replace any of the connection rods or camshaft bearings? Did you have pictures from the paper gauge measures? To show specs, what about torque spec for connecting rods bolts and cams bolts as well timen chain bolts, sorry for all the questions man I just like to go smoothly, let me Know please

    All the bearings were in spec and torque specs are all in the manual I have provided for download below, 180 medium hone stone using a 30-40 degree crosshatch pattern.

    Hey danlatu,
    Is me again, wandering if you can answer couple of questions 1/2 is ther torque converter bolts holding the transmission Attached to the engine like a regular automatic transmission, or is just like a stick transmission only a shaft? 2/2 you mentioned you have to remove your crankshaft pulley for clearance what about the water pump did you remove it as well? I'm on this 2 last steps to pull my whole engine out let me know man,

    Engine is out, very easy to remove with out water pump and pulley is plenty of room,
    I can say this is probably easier than civics lol thanks danlatu, now to start the rebuild

    Today's progress on the Prius engine, all the parts need to be cleaned and then put back together probably next weekend, here is some pictures,
    Piston #1 was the head gasket fail, that one Piston is nice and clean probably steam cleaned

    Every head gasket looks to pop cylinder number 1. Car was definitely burning oil from the looks of the pistons.

    Please remind me again: number one, as you're standing at the front of the car with the engine installed, is on your left?

    (I don't think the $#&*+ Repair Manual says, seem to recall looking.)

    One other thing, @danlatu noted with his, one piston at TDC was a little low, and that turned out to be a hydro-locked case, with piston arm bent.

    I think the pretty much eternal universal convention is that cylinders are numbered starting at the "front" of the engine ... in a transverse-mounted engine of course that's the side of the car ... the side where the transmission isn't ... so, yes.

    On a V engine, one bank will be slightly frontward of the other one, and the frontmost cylinder in that bank is #1.
