Best mpg to date

I was able to once get 76.4 mph over 417.8 miles and later 75 mpg over 805.2 miles (one tank over two weeks).

 

Ken, you're the best :first:, I really don't know how you can get that mileage :hail:.
My best tank was a 3.3 l/100km (71.3 mpg). I drove for 1100 km (683 us miles) on the everyday way to work and back. Flat urban and suburban road, 34 km (21 miles) each trip.

Last month I got 3.0 l/100km (78.4 mpg) on a 50 km trip, starting with cold engine.

But you Ken.. 117 mpg.. that's incredible :rockon:

Well, today I did a 40 mile round trip averaging 40MPH and got 57.9MPG. This is the first time I have attained high 50's. My new trick is to keep my instantaneous MPG as high as possible whenever the ICE is running. That along with utilizing the HSI for the standard pulse/glide/coast/braking anticipation strategy seems to have made a big difference. Since I don't have a scangauge and hence don't know my RPM, the only way I can tell how efficiently the engine is running is how high a reading I am getting on the iMPG.

Oh and one more thing. Since I am now keying off the instantaneous MPG gauge, I seem to get better gas mileage around town if I do my pulsing when tihe ICE is running. So, when I am operating in the left side of the HSI and the iMPG gauge is less than 100 MPG that's when I pulse and pulse agressively. Heck, the ICE is running anyway, might as well take advantage of it.

 

Does any one notice how much the number of passengers effcts the mpg?

Thank you very much Ken! I read the interesting post you showed in the "pulse and glide" link, where we can see the pulse and glide zones in the Hybrid System Indicator.
Just two question:
1) which is the most efficient rpm for the internal combustion engine in gen3? I'm monitoring this value with a scangaugeII and I'm usually around 1280 rpm. Maybe the most efficient rpm is a little higher.
2) in the picture you post about your record I saw an avg speed of 34km/h: so a very efficient P&G speed range could be from 50 km/h to 20 km/h. Is that correct?

Ps: The whole world thoughts are close to people of Japan, in these hard days. I pray for the victims of the earthquake, and I pray that everything will be fine soon for everybody there. I am impressed from images tv is showing. Japan is a great and strong country and so are Japanese people: I'm sure Japan is already rising up from this disaster and is showing the world how great nation is, once again.

 

Yes, extra weight of any kind makes a difference. The higher in the mpg range you go, the more significant even the smallest things make like weight, tire pressure, wind, etc.

 

Please refer to attached engine efficiency map derived from this thread.
The 220g/kWh area is the most efficient and Prius tries to trace the area for the best.
So, I think from 1250rpm to 3000rpm are OK.
I used to pulse at range from 1500rpm to 2000rpm.
However, I watch HSI levels (75-110%) than the tacho-meter.

Every time I see an expert's screen, it shows approx 35km/h average speed.
I used to pulse up to 50km/h and glide down to 35km/h by displayed speed which is 45km/h to 31km/h actual speed.

my best is 73.4 mpg, yep seventythree point four. of course that was from the 1.4 mile trip after filling up and resetting the trip meter and a mostly down hill run to the house. LOL

my best actual mileage is 56.2 mpg

 

Another piece of magic in Japan is no looting after the disaster. Virtually anywhere else in the world, except maybe China, this would not be the case.

I got a surprising 57.9 mpg (according to the display) on my way home from work last night. It is a distance of approximately 50 miles of relatively flat terrain. Normally, my mpg is in the 53 mpg range.

 

The best MPG per tank is 50.17, and the best trip MPG is 69.8 for a 25 mile trip.

I love this car.

 

When I reached 99.9, that mpg reading stayed on the screeen for a sustained period of time. It looks like it only goes to 99.9 on the HSI. Has anyone had it go past that in the US?

 

No, but if you were able to stay at a level above 99.9 and then go fill your tank and do the hand calculation, you'd see something above 99.9.

 

I once had a run at getting the best fuel consumption at my Prius' top speed. Between Pofadder and Kakamas (GPS coordinates S28 51.066 E20 08.697) there is a flat stretch of road that some of the big German auto manufacturers use to test their vehicles and where they are allowed speeds of up to 250 km/h (156 mph). I reset the consumption meter on the road and set the cruise control at 180 km/h(113 mph). After 20 minutes the MFD showed 7.8 l/100km (30.2 mpg)! I thought that the consumption would be at least 10 to 12 l/100km (20 to 23 mpg) but I was pleasantly surprised.

 

My best mpg was on my commute to work. Distance is 43 miles and I got 75 mpg!

 

I just got 67MPG on a 65-mile trip, using some of the guidance I've read here and what I saw on YouTube. That wasn't even flat level ground. Half of it was in a mountainous area. This is cool because I've only had my Prius for two weeks, and I'm learning how to slay the supposed 50MPG. I get 55MPG typically on the highway, whereas it's rated 48MPG?
