I took a rare 84 mile trip (each way) down and back. I did my best on the way down using every trick that I have learned. 70.8MPG according to the trip computer. On the way back 64.6MPG without putting in much effort mostly because the passenger wanted to get home fast. This was all mostly freeway driving down I-5 from Seattle to the Olympia area. Have photo evidence to document both directions mileage. My goal was 60MPG overall. I like to set the bar low.

I personally think that any submitted best mileage should be on a trip on mostly level terrain and 50 miles or more. My hypermiling trip 84 miles was the best I can do. I think my trip 70.8mpg trip is about as good as Gen4 Prius technology has. My only tip to my many techniques besides driving by hand and in eco mode. Drafting big rigs and SUV's was used.

**best case mileage can only be achieved with the summer ethanol mix.

I get 55 or better with highway driving on my Trim 2 . Sounds like the Eco did not gain much fuel economy over the Trim Two.

That's about what my wife gets with her trim 2 also. She has quite a few short trips that pull her average down a little bit. But once in a while, she hits the jackpot on a short drive. This one was with an already warmed up engine after her last stop coming home from about 8 miles away. The 1.5 miles crossed a low hill and finished maybe 25 feet higher than where it started.

Well done. I have a traffic trick if you want to raise it higher.

While teaching my son to drive yesterday - not his first lesson - he managed 77 mpg over 80+ miles. All on 2-lane out-of-town roads, few stops, 40-50 mph, upper 80s ambient temp, NOT using cruise control.
That is unheard of for this time of year, in my experience. I've gotten close to that on one tank 4 yrs ago, at night, in Jan with upper 60s and tons of cruise used on 45 mph roads. I had 74 mpg over nearly 300 miles before a highway stint dropped me to 68 for the tank.
    I'm impressed. And proud.

If it was in Florida, it doesn't matter much. There isn't enough elevation change in that state to give very much of a one way gravity boost.

... However, a one way route that was heavily tail-wind-driven ...

Exactly. Wind direction and speed are usually much bigger factors here. But the middle of the state is a couple hundred feet higher than the coast, so that can have an impact. Still, it's usually the wind.

All in Sarasota & Manatee Counties (around Myakka State Park for those curious or in-the-know), driving out from town, with several stops & 3 point turns, on multiple roads before returning to town. So both ways on every road driven on. No wind assist.

how reliable are the MPG readings reported by the trip computer? I'm dubious the MPG reported is fully accurate. I've been meaning to do my own calculation based on the volume of the gas tank, amount of gas, and odometer readings to get an accurate comparison, but I was wondering if anyone has done this already.

The MPG display is a bit optimistic (5-10%), but also varies from car to car, so you'll still want to do the fuel logging and arithmetic for your own circumstances.

Every tank for years. It's the only way to know your actual mpg.

Mine has been reliable, checked regularly initially, occasionally now. RTE is suspect but mpg is solid for me.
