Best all-season tires for the prius

I am keeping an eye on the crowd sourced comments on TIre Rack about these. One Prius owner reported an about 10 mpg drop with these tires. They are rated LRR, and Consumer's rated their rolling resistance as good/low. They otherwise sound like very exceptional tires so far. It is likely these or the Michelin Energy saver A/S. The Michelins were good on my former Prius c except they are rather incapable on snow, as the Tire Rack commenter's scores reflect.

Michelin Cross Climates are not a quasi snow tire in the sense you describe and my MPG is fine. Have a look at the reviews if you want to know more but I don't think you can safely assume that a new and different product matches your experience of past products. True snows are not justifiable in the UK and these are better in the wet than summer tyres, (and we get lots of rain here), and almost as good in the dry. V happy with my purchase.

I had Nokian WRG2 on Pearl, and they didn't drop the mileage a bit. Improved grip a LOT! Just put WRG3 on Pearl S last year, and I don't see any mileage hit. Again, much better grip, better in rain, better in snow (a lot better ). Don't wear excessively in summer use.

All four tyres of course.

Which reminds me, time to check the spare pressure!

 

My WRG2 were "extra load", I wonder if that could be a factor? This was on a 06 Civic Hybrid, was using them as "snow tires", mounted on separate rims. When I'd swap back to Bridgestone Ecopia EP20 in spring I'd see a mpg uptick.

The WRG3 are noted to have lower rolling resistance, by Kal Tire. Also, on Nokian Tire website I see mention of a new "Weatherproof" line. They also mention LRR.

 

After reading reviews on the Continentals, and the Michelin Defenders and the General Altimax RT43 the Prius seems to not like any of them! Any think of just getting another set of EP422 Plus so there are no surprises?

 

That's a very good approach. There's an urge to "improve" your tire situation when replacing them. But if what you want is a decent all-season with LRR, that's likely what Toyota was focusing on too, when they spec'd the OEM tire.

 

My experience with Nokians has also been very positive. I plan on getting extra wheels and a set of WRg3s to use in the winter (The OE EP22s look like they will fare poorly in snow). When the EP22s wear out, the Nokians will be on my 2016 Prius year around.

When you compare tire MPG, you have to take into account the real revs/mile. Just because both tires are the same "size" doesn't mean that they are identical. Revs/mile differences affect the calibration of your odometer and therefore your MPG measurement.

I can pretty much vouch for that, lol. The EP20 tread pattern is such that once they're down to around 5/32" there's pretty much nothing but longitudinal grooves. I found them terrible.

 

You have to watch which Nokian tyres you get. Some sizes are available in two different load ratings. I always try to the get the higher rating (for safety).

Pearl and Pearl S both use them year round, though both cars are usually sleeping in the owners garage during the extreme part of winter. I use my FJ Cruiser, and Pearl's owner uses an Isuzu PU. The packed snow ruts can get deep enough to clear off the underside of necessary bits.

 

I use Nokian WR G3s. They are ALL Year rated as opposed to All Season. They are Low Rolling Resistance and work fine on the sun, on ice, in slush and snow. They do not seem to affect mileage. If they do I don't notice it.
Do a bit of resarch to see if they are good for you. Check the Nokian website as well as Consumers Report on the WR G3s. They should be good for most of us. No need for buying a second set of wheels/tires, storing them and changing them twice a year. However, if you are a real ski bum or live in real snow country stick to a Michelin X Ice or similar. Don't worry about winter mileage, it will be bad anyway because you will use gas to heat the car. Think of safety first!

I'm looking for All Seasons to replace the Toyos the vehicle came with used. I drive in winter with winter tires (Bridgestone WS-80), the grip and confidence is unmatched - especially in Canadian winters.

I'm looking at the Energy Saver A/S, but i'm open to any good suggestions.

Anyone think of what tire the ECO model uses and using the PSI listed for the ECO? Speaking of which, what tire model is it?

 

Yes. And lots of us do. I recommend a few extra PSI in the tires. I personally am currently running 39r / 40f, but others on here are running 42 psi all around w/o issue...

The Eco does not have any special tire attributed to it as originally planned. It can have any of the three main tires as found on any other 15" wheeled Prius available. FYI.

I am disappointed with the choice of an 's' rated tire as th OE, given the sportier suspension. I drive hilly curvy 55 mph roads for my daily commute. My next set will be a h or v rated tire. The higher the speed rating, the stiffer the side wall. I may opt for a +1 rim size for the summer if I can find one in the same weight range as the oem15 inchers. I've had good luck with continentals on my Jetta-good performing tire without the sticker shock of a Michelin.

 

I put a set of General Altimax on my 2010 prius 3 and it performed well. Same mpgs as Ecopia and they lasted longer. Road noise was not terrible either. I paid $300 for the set and got a $50 rebate. This was two years ago.

I'm thinking of purchasing the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus tires (I have the stock EP20 tires on now). I was considering buying the Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires, but they are nearly twice as much. I live in Chicago, where they keep the streets plowed and salted down pretty well in the city, but less so in the suburbs. Does anyone have experience with the EP422 tires? How do they do with MPG? How do they do in the rain and light snow?
