Yes 6x9 up front, and 6.5 or 6.75 round in the rear. I don't know about overkill but given the speakers you are looking at I think the 2-way will sound as good if not better.

The 6.5" components up front was just additional information. There are not many choices on 6x9 components, and the better speakers are available as 6.5". The speaker in the door and dash act as one full range speaker source, so you may want to install 2 way components, instead of just doing the door speakers. This is more expensive though.

So, it sounds like if I replace the front door speakers with 2-ways, the dash speaker will still function. That's good because I don't to tear apart the dash to get at that speaker.

Infinity makes the Kappa series in 6X9 3-ways but I think I'll take your advice and go with the 2-way (Reference series) and save a little money. Thanks again.

Yup, love my JBL system. I just changed the settings today and i am really enjoying it!! My previous settings were: +1 for treble, mid, bass with ASL OFF. My new settings are: Treble 0, Mid +1, Bass 0, ASL ON. With ASL ON, it seems like imaging is improve, but not sure.

I just got the Gen III Friday evening, The JBL sound system in my Prius IV definitely worth it, I used to upgrade radio on my previous car, the JBL audio in the prius actually have better imaging and detail, once you pop in a test CD you will find overall sound is very good and fit in daily commute usage, now...AM/FM sound are not up to par compare to SAT radio and CDs, as a matter of fact the SAT audio is very good, bass is punchy, mid and high very detail. BT audio streaming is o.k but I prefer USB or 3.5mm jack and it sound much much more detail and fuller. I read some posts on the forum mention these JBL speakers are very low impedance = less stress on the power amplifier. This just my personal opinion may not agreeable with other members on the forum.

I'm blown away by the quality of the JBL. Very good bass (maybe a little TOO much bass) with no sub, and that's a good thing: Any sub can do loud bass, but it takes a very good (and expensive, and well-placed...) subwoofer to get good bass. Ported and bandpass boxes tend to have a few loud peaks but very uneven response. Sealed speaker enclosures such as door speakers tend to have flatter response.

Having a 400W amp doesn't hurt either. Even if it's not playing loud, a beefy amp means there's more headroom for peaks and less distortion.

In terms of audio quality, Audio CD playback will always be the best, of course.
MP3 CDs and USB are almost as good, and the quality of the source matters most. Same thing with analog AUX.
BT always loses some treble detail because of limited bitrate.
XM... Well, I love the variety and the traffic info, but the audio quality is average at best. They really compress the heck out of it to pack in more channels.
AM/FM is AM/FM radio. 'nuff said.

    My settings:
    AUX/CD: Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0, F/R 0, L/R 0
    USB/BT: Bass -1, Mid 0, Treble 0 ...
    SAT: Bass -1, Mid 0, Treble +1 ...
    AM/FM: Bass -1, Mid +1, Treble +1 ...

Just some FYI stuff in case anyone has not seen it.

Toyota's description of JBL: JBL Premium Sound for Your New Toyota

    According to forum moderator (HTMLSpinnr):

"With EQ flat, I did some bass test from my laptop via AUX in. Using both pre-recorded test tones, and tone generation within Audacity, the audible cutoff seems to be 29Hz, with 40Hz being completely audible. High end, 15.8kHz is where I perceive it to start to fall off with 16kHz almost inaudible. That could either be the speakers, my hearing, or my low quality AUX cable."

So, overall, the JBL system in our Prius is pretty damn good, considering that it does not have a true subwoofer nor a true tweeter. It is amazing what proper tuning and DSP can do to a system! I think that this is where the aftermarket is rapidly falling behind OEM stuff. To make an aftermarket system sound good, it takes a lot of cash. And yeah, i have gone the aftermarket route a while back...never going back there again!

yes thai, full approbation from me. it is fantastic to hear the jbl. i use a +3 on treble and the bass is on 0. here in europe the standard hu has only treble and bass settings. but we have this little kick from backwards, you know what i mean. i think i can maybe improve my sound to change the hu, but i am not sure about it. and it cost a lot of money.

last week i had the opportunity to hear a soundsystem in a porsche panamera. it was a 1300W system with 13 speakers i believe. the manufacturer was burmester, a german high end audio company located in berlin (option by porsche when you order this car). the cost of this system was 6000 euro. and what should i say, i think the sound in our prii is very good. i can nothing hear what would make me to spend 6000 euros. after 3 minutes the panamera pops a system message "low power voltage". and the driver must start the engine. ok the volume was a little bit high :).

it is very fantastic to drive around with my prius and to hear, for example, music by kraftwerk (live album, minimum-maximum) the track named "computer world". and i sit in this hightech prius cockpit. unbelievable.

Not sure about over there, but if you can find a car with B&O audio (Jaguar XJ) or Mark Levinson Reference (Lexus LS/LX) systems, then you will really be impress with what OEM audio can do these days!

B&O is in the A8, no? I thought the XJ had a B&W (Bowens & Wilkens).

Ah crap...i meant B&W in Jaguar. B&O in Audi sucks from what i read...B&O tweeters are overly bright, even in their home audio systems.

Really? That's disappointing. I have a pair of B&O headphones and absolutely love them. They don't have the bass you'd find from a Sony or "Dr DRE" set of headphones but the clarity of the sound from them is the best I've heard from our collection of headphones at home.

B&O actually makes very good amplifiers...something that is not well known about their company. Their home speakers are more for design enthusiasts than music enthusiasts. Don't get me wrong, their speakers and integrated amps play real loud, but the balance is not there...and they can be a bit harsh. They are not as natural sounding as some of the other high end home speakers. From what i have read, this applies to their car audio systems too. Your ears may vary. For me (note that this is my sole opinion), they are more of a super high end BOSE than a music enthusiast system.
