Battery starting to deplete more quickly

How fast are you charging your battery ? Are you fully charging it in 2 hours like I do ? I'm always using 16Amp/220V and that is maybe what has degraded my battery.... I currently can charge around 5.2kw from 0 GOM to around 33 miles on GOM ( fully charged ). I'm not using HV portion of the battery ...

 

the difference is negligible. how much has your battery degraded?

 

I've seen the car pull 190A out of the battery and push 90A into the battery. I don't think that the difference between 12 and 16 amps will make a difference.

I'm now at 71000 miles and I've bought this car at 31000 ... Compared to 3 years ago, my battery capacity has lost around 10-15%...
I've been using this car around 62% in EV mode ( around 73.5 mpg during last 40000miles ).

it's not all about amperage....it's about amount of heat being generated during charging ....

 

as an update, I've just did a trip of 58.5km ( 36.3 miles ) in EV mode until my ICE started... Average speed was 50km/h ( 31mph ). My PB achieved 3 years ago was 63.5km with one charge ...So battery degradation is a little bit less than 10% if I take into account distance driven on EV only ...

 

It takes me 1:50 to charge from empty. (My voltage is 240.)

How do you manage to stop and charge at the moment your range/SOS indicator goes to "--"? I'm always a little above or below that point when I get home if I've used all my range.

And it's the amperage that causes the heat. The more amps, the more heat.

I don't know what the battery capacity on mine was when it was new since I bought it used with 24,000 miles over three years ago. But it would be a big surprise if it wasn't lower than when new. My maximum range is lower than it used to be, but as you can see in post #5, capacity hasn't gone down much in the past 2-1/2 years.

Keeping the car in the hot sun will hurt the battery a lot more than L2 charging since L2 makes a lot less heat than simply driving the car. I either keep mine in the shade or, if there's no shade, I use window shades all the way around.

 

IMHO, a single data-point PB distance comparison from 3 years ago to now is probably not very meaningful. There are just too many variables that affect EV efficiencies. I see easily at least 10-15% EV efficiency differences from a day-to-day operation even on the same route. The battery degradation is a fact of life that cannot be avoided, but you really can't make a conclusive statement about the battery degradation, let alone the % loss of capacity, from small samples of uncontrolled driving data comparisons.

Here are data points for the full EV range (100%-0%) on my almost 1-year-old 2021 PP with 8500 miles. As you can see, the daily fluctuation of 10-15% is very common. In addition, a seasonal variation is almost 100% (summer time max of 38miles, winter time mini of 16miles). Still, you can see the trend that my 1-year-old PP has not lost much EV range (thus battery capacity) during the last 1 year. Maybe just a slight reduction, maybe... but not likely to be statistically significant.

 

based on the personal experiences i've read here, 36 miles at 31mph average is excellent, and 10% drop after 5+ years and 40,000+ ev miles is even more excellent.

 

I'm usually doing short trips around the home which allows me to arrive at charging point when I only have just a couple of km left as a range ( or even 0 range left )
