That would be good! Unfortunately we never actually saw the rat, only evidence of his presence.

I'm just amazed at how common this problem is! Hey, wait, maybe the government should investigate this, too!

This is where a standard Moggie house cat comes in *very* handy.

I have mice and rats at the hobby farm, and my cat takes care of them pronto. He even lines the mangled corpses up for inspection, as he knows he'll get a treat from me.

I'm reluctant to use poison, as mice/rats tend to crawl into something like a wall before they croak. I've gone through that, the stench and rotting corpse is beyond words.

I have dealt with mice, hate mice, feral cats, eat mice good, squirrels, eat wholes in the house, had a cougar in the back yard for a month, not good, and always coyotes, see them in the morning when I am driving home but thank god no rats. I would try traps but be careful with sticky traps and make sure the rat is dead they can bite through heavy leather gloves.

I suppose the Cougar would eat any pesky humans or feral cats you have in your yard.

I had a Pine Marten living at my hobby farm several years ago. That thing was just vicious around squirrels and mice. It would wrap itself around the tree trunk at the ground and remain motionless until the squirrel came down.

Then Mr. Marten would instantly sink his long claws into the squirrel, which would usually give a shriek of pain. Then Mr. Marten would sink in his fangs and that was the end of that. All in all, very satisfying. Of course, I kept the cat inside the house.

To show how much he liked me, Mr. Marten would then poop on the back step. Such is life ...
