Backup camera part #

Is Japan the only place that offers the backup camera?

In browsing the schematics of other Toyotas that offer a backup camera there is mention of a Television ECU. I wonder if, for example, the Sienna Television ECU might work in the Prius and if so if it might plug into the head unit or the NAV display. And then there's the cost...

 

The blue plug on my package 8 nav system is empty. If we can figure out which is the video input pins on that connector, if it is the right connector, then what's wrong with using a generic 12vdc cctv camera from any source. Mount it INSIDE the hatch looking out through the lower window. Power could come from the back-up lights so it is only energized when the car is in reverse.

 

So I assume this means to even consider this, one MUST have the NAV? We Canadians don't get the NAV option.

OMG! So, has anyone ripped that panel off their North American Prius 2004 yet? Can anyone read Japanese? I wonder how the system knows to access the iPod's signal. And I wonder if the video is active too. And I hope NAV isn't needed.

I found some interesting information regarding the camera option from some toyota documents. Due to copy right laws, I can't post this information here, but I can tell you...

The ’04 Prius uses 3 types of com links in order to slim down the wiring harnesses. Of interest is the AVC-LAN (Audio Visual Communication), which networks the ECUs of the avs and the av devices, and maintains links between the devices and the ECUs

I believe the camera would have to be on the AVC-LAN for the nav computer to see it. There are several references to video capable devices listed in the hardware address list in the document.

I believe the Rr-TV is the rear backup camera device.
The AVC-Lan is essentially a local area network running a differential voltage circuit @ 17.8 kbps over twisted pair. On startup the system checks for devices on the network and identifies the units. The software may or may not have the options to support these optional devices. Putting the NAV into diag mode may shed some light, but the diags may only show up if the devices are recognized on the lan. I found this information on the TIS site techinfo.toyota.com doc RM1075U. I would be very cautious in connecting any devices or equipment to any open connectors or the AVC-LAN or NAV computer. An overload could conceivably run over the network and blow out many ECUs on the chain. I'm not even certain what would happen if the nav computer could not identify the protocol being transmitted over the line even if one were to build an interface. I believe in light of this new information I'd look for the OEM camera and ECU for the prius. Since it's clearly documented and looks to be operation in Japan, It may be only a matter of time before Toyota decides to release it in the US. Who knows. Maybe one of you adventurous owners out there may find a prius rear cam and instructions on how to install it. Anyway, I thought the group may be interested in this information
