Forgot about two diodes!!! I tried 2 diodes but never worked.

If you buy toyota OEM prius camera ($600 I guess), you won't need relay! It's 6V camera.

If you buy eBay camera($20), you need a relay as diagram show!!!

Make your own choice! No more confused!

    Thanks for the valuable information.
Where did you place your relay?

    Thanks!

Please read the diagram carefully. It shows part number.

For removing the Headliner, can you tell me which pages is it in?

    Thanks!

If you see post 78, the Prius_RearViewCamera_PZ473_G0140_00_AIM_001_911_1.pdf, what pages should I look at for removing the Headliner?

    Thanks!

I am not sure I understand your question?
The Camera has V+, V- (video cable) and the B+ & ground supply the 12 volt power to the camera.

The relay is used to supply the 12 v power for the camera. If a input of 6 volt is applied, the magnet will attract the contact, which will turn on the 12 volt power (supplying the power to the camera or turning on the camera).

I believe this topic is covered in physic class if you take a course either in high school or in college course. You can also research this topic in the internet, which will explain in details of "how does a relay works".

I've taken several physics classes but isn't the data given in sine waves and not digital bits? I'm just trying to figure out how tapping all 3 into 1 will let the camera decipher what's what?

Anyone is welcome to chime in. This is what I think, how it works on the Prius 2012 backup camera.

After the Prius is powered on and the "ready" light is on. The 6v is activated momentarily to check if the camera is available. Since we have hooked up the solenoid it will think there is a camera available. Now, if we shift to reverse, I believe the 6v dc is activated, powering on the solenoid. Consequently, supplying a 12 volt to the camera.

The 12v can come from the reverse-light, or from the wiper's 12 volt. Either ways it is okay. The camera's 12 volt only draws ~ 90mA (.09 A). The 12volt reverse light can handle the current draw without any issue.

In summary, the camera needs the video output connection and a +12 volt connection. No digital bits or sine wave involve in this backup camera.

    Hi our1vue,
I have the same problem removing the middle of the hatch panel?
Did you ever figure out how to remove the middle hatch panel?

    Thanks!

Were you able to remove all the rear hatch plastic panels?

    Thanks!

Do you have a picture location of the wires?
Were you able to remove the panel cover in the hatch?
A picture that shows how it is done would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Thanks. I will take your route through the left kick panel, headliner is not the way to go.

I have some problem removing the middle section plastic panel under the hatch (under the wiper).

In the Toyota Manual Ref. no. AIM 001 911-1, on page 17 of 30. It shows pictorial diagrams of 31, 32, 33 and to 34.
The pictorial diagram is missing a middle section panel removal procedure after 33. It went directly to diagram 34, which is the bottom panel.

My guess is that the 2012 Prius model, the construction of the plastic panel is a bit different than the previous year. So, it did not show the additional middle section panel.

How did you remove the middle plastic panel without breaking the panel?

Here is some picture of the middle and bottom panel. View attachment 45316 View attachment 45317 View attachment 45318 View attachment 45319 View attachment 45320

I haven't done mine yet, but I'm getting convinced the kickpanel is the way to go. As far as needing a relay (or to not need a relay), could you hitch the 12V camera power to the backup lights. They would only supply voltage to the camera when the car is in reverse. For the 6V supply lines to the camera (to "sense" the presence of a camera) , instead of putting diodes between the two wires, shouldn't a low value resistor be used instead ? I'm not sure what is the resistance of the relay, but that would be a good place to start. The resistor could be placed in the kickpanel area so there would be only a need to run 2 wires from the back of the car to the kickpanel.

Or just get the Tacoma camera..
Or wait till February Beatsonic has a solution (for the harness)

    Jay J,
What is their solution (if you are allowed to tell us) ?

A complete plug and play harness :) I think you may need to drop the headliner to plug into it though (don't quote me on that part-yet)
