BACK UP CAMERA FOR 2012 PRIUS two TOUCH SCREEN- NON NAV

It's on page 4 but there was an early post where some said that when you press and hold the power button and at the same time put the car momentarily in reverse, the camera will turn on and stay on.

 

There is a way to use the 12 volt camera wired to the backup light and a single 43 ohm resistor could be used as a dummy 6v camera. The resistor could be used as a load to simulate that a camera is connected to the white and orange wires. The camera video+ would connect to the red wire and the camera video - would connect to the black wire . I would have to think about that and come up with a diagram.

 

I've thought about this as well, but satisfied with what I did, so I won't experiment any more. BUT if I did:

I would try the 43 ohm resistor between orange and white wires. This would let the HU detect the dummy camera. Then connect the camera to be supplied between the backup lite (+12, lite blue) and chassis (gnd). Connect the camera video to RED and BLK. The camera will then power the camera when in reverse to send video to the HU. Or possibly needs the camera return current to go to the ORG wire and not GND. Would need to try.

Truly a simplier connection. Only the 2 vid wires to the kick panel connection, possibly a 3rd for the return current.

Are the reverse light wires run so you can easily tap into them ? On my car the reverse lights are not in the hatch,
but in the side fender. I know some people have been tapping into the blue wiper motor which is in the hatch, but
is hot all the time the car is on.
I'm going with the 3.3V camera wired into the 6V camera wires like DogPrius. With the help of my EE friend, we build the 3.3V
regulator with the LD1117V33C and 2 caps. The cost for the parts were about $3. I can attach a picture if someone
wants to see what it looks like.

 

The backup lite wire is accessible through the pull out panel in each side of the trunk area. I did this early on thinking I was going to connect in there. I don't remember the colors of the wires, but you can figure it out using a test lite or meter by connecting it to the lamp and putting gear in reverse, checking the voltage to chassis ground from each wire to the lamp.

 

I think this harness might solve some of these concerns with the proper trigger and looks like it may already have the relay included as well and seems pretty much plug an play. http://www.beatsonicusa.com/cameras/bcus2.html

It's nice that someone makes an adapter cable for 12 volt cameras. The problem is, now you have to run the wires all the way to the front and tear into the head unit. I made the connection at the headliner where the wires already run to the HU.

The Beatsonic adapter is unnecessary and extremely overpriced.

 

Does anyone know the type (CCD or CMOS) of the stock prius camera ? I know CMOS cameras draw less energy
and was wondering if the 100 milli-amps the CCD versions draw would tax the radio's 6V power capibilities. I read that an aftermarket CMOS camera draws 60 milli-amps. I also know that CCD produce better pictures which is why most people go with them.
It is interesting looking at the Hong Kong Ebay websites, the pictures of the CMOS and CCD cameras are the same. The only thing different is the price. Wonder how you know which one
they really send you.

 

I installed a backup camera in my model two about a year ago. Its power triggers from the backup light and the video runs to the video input of a Magellan GPS. It works fine but I always wanted to use the HU for display. After reading this thread I thought it was worth a try. Since the video RCA connector was already in the kick panel I connected stiff wires to a matching connector and stuck them along side the red and black wires. So long as you shift into reverse before the Toyota emblem disappears from the screen, the camera is detected.

The small resistor between the white and orange wire sounds interesting. 6.5 V across 43 ohms would draw about 151 mA. I think someone said that was the current draw for a typical camera. It would be simple to stick the resistor wires next to the white and orange in the plug.

 

Just tried the resistor and was not surprised when it did not work. It didn't seem reasonable that Toyota would use two means for detecting the camera. Since my camera is detected when it sends a video signal while the HU is booting, why also check for a current between white and orange?

Here is what I believe happens: The factory install is a 6 volt camera, When the HU boots it provides power to the camera through the white wire. The camera sends back a video signal through the red and black which is detected by the HU. At the end of the boot cycle, when the Toyota logo is no longer displayed, white is not powered and the camera is off until the car is put in reverse. The orange is probably just ground which would make sense since the camera is in the hatch and ground would be iffy through the hinges.

Most cheap cameras are 12 volt so the factory process won't work. The 6 - 6.5 volts provided by white is not enough to make a 12 volt camera produce a video signal. It would seem that the only way to mimic a factory system is to use the 6 volt white to trigger a switch that sends 12 volts to the camera. If there were an easily accessible 12 volt source that was always hot I might give it a try. Most posts speak of the rear wiper, but that is in the hatch and I don't relish pulling the panels again. Any ideas for an easier source?

 

You'll have to take the panels off anyways to install the camera, and the hatch panels aren't too much of a pain compared to others in the car. I used the rear wiper power source and it wasn't too difficult.

 

My camera is already installed and working so I don't need to get into the hatch again. It is powered by the backup light. I would like to power it through a transistor switch triggered by the built in 6 v supply so I don't have to shift into reverse during HU boot to have the camera detected. There is a fuse block next to the kick panel so I can probably find a hot wire there.

 

Are they any pics of whats being discussed. Would like tackle this wkend coming up.

I don't know how you can see a surface mount resistor, let alone solder them. You must have good eyes
and a steady hand. I made (with help) a 3.3v regulator with "normal size" components.

I'm new to forum but I have a 2012 Prius II with the 6.1 HU. It is prewired for a camera. There are so many ways to install the careras that I'm not sure witch is best. I have gotten confused from the diffent cameras and mods.
1. Which installation
2. Which camera for that installation (on Ebay)
I'm wanting it to work like the factory set up.
