I'd insist they take it back and restore full beep, lol. Not kidding: with the return-to-centre shifter, I need all the help I can get. I believe just disconnecting the 12 volt for a few seconds will accomplish this?
I don't know why Toyota don't put the beeper outside the car, where we (the driver) can't hear it (or it's quieter for us), but pedestrians walking behind can.
If not rhetorical: it's a patch, for the mute, return-to-centre shifter. It doesn't really help much though. I'd much prefer a shifter you push through the positions, I never got lost with those.
In my experience in my Gen 4, disconnecting the 12 volt battery does not change the carista options - or the saved trip meters or saved eco data on the computer. All it does is reset the clock.
Oh - that's annoying when vehicles beep - I can understand it on a construction site or a carpark area. But when neighbours reverse out of their yard in small trucks early in the morning (or any time of the day for that matter) - BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP .
Doesn't the business edition have the collision avoidance or the warning beeps as you're reversing up to (or into) an object/wall etc. ?
My Excel version won't let me crash into anything at low speeds, it warns me with a red square on the MFD saying "BRAKE" then if I don't brake or swerve, it applies the brakes (emergency stop) just before it hits the obstacle. The first time I experienced this was as I was slowly turning into my drive and a some weeds were poking through the open gate from the right hand side, the sensor(s) picked this up and stopped me. The brakes applied with such force and the car stopped so suddenly that I though I had hit the wall that the gate was attached to.
Behind all this: what gear the car is in, is not readily apparent. There's a small display on the dash (ever look at it?) and the return-to-centre shifter, which is no help. The beep is a patch, to remediate these shortcomings, and not a very good one. I've lost track of the times of lost track that I'm still in reverse, beep and all. So far it hasn't been disastrous, but I did just about jump a curb once. I appreciate it's all electronic, doesn't need to hold a position, but: the traditional automatic shift, at least for me, is so much more intuitive. Please please please Toyota: consider mimicking a traditional shift, say something like this: (Honda Pilot dash)
Hmmm, am I the only one actually like the back-up beeping? It does let me know if I accidently put the gear in R instead of D.
Nope, he's not alone. Still pretty useless, doesn't stop me losing track sometimes, but better than nothing. Referring to the pic I posted above: the linear shifter, where you push it from one gear to the next, is so much better at keeping you oriented.
My natural tendency is to put gear in forward (in Prius it is more like "upward") for Drive. I don't know why many cars put R position on top of D.
I think that's very common; all our Hondas were thus. The main thing I think: Don't get clever, change from the norm, throw in a cutesy return-to-center shifter. I think Toyota's hit all of those, lol. I like the traditional shifter. If for example you wanted to push it into neutral, to reduce transmission shudder at a red light, you pushed it away from you, as far as it would go without your thumb on the lock button. This would put in in Neutral, with no risk of going into reverse. Light goes green: you pull it one click towards you. This gets ingrained, muscle-memory as they say, and it's so common.
I found this information. P-R-N-D is a US government standard, specifically US Department of Transportation Standard No. 102. (It also mandates starter interlock, direction of shift pattern on column mounted selectors, etc) US Department of Transportation Standard No. 102 At least for my old Honda, P-R-N-D was sequential. From Parked position, I had no way to shift FORWARD. With Prius, from Parked position I can shift the knob either Forward for R or Backward for D. I can never get used to this.
I love the joystick shifter and I have never been in a situation where I didn't know what gear I was in. I have the beeper set to beep once.
