Attention anyone who lives in a hot climate...

I'm in Phoenix, temps over 110 every afternoon this month. My driving is either 65-70mph on the freeways during rush hour in the HOV lane (any slower is rude to the other drivers, and the other lanes require a lot more changes in speed) or short trips around town. In this heat I've been steady around 45mpg. In moderate temps I can usually stay around 50-52mpg unless DH drives a lot.

I don't know how anyone could drive here without A/C. I just leave mine on Auto, with occasional temp changes between 73-75.

 

We got up to 62 today......... and I'm getting 52.6 on this tank so far........

but remember, there's no humidity!!

52.5mpg in Puerto Rico. It's about 95-100F but pretty hilly where I live so I guess it'll affect the mileage, still pretty decent number i think...

I transplanted to South Carolina about a month ago, and it has been in the high 80s/low-mid 90s ever since with humidity fluctuating between tolerable and not so tolerable. Don't need A/C in the morning but it is usually mandatory in the afternoon. That said, I've been seeing averages in the 58mpg range in mixed but highway-biased driving. This thing doesn't seem to mind the heat at all as long as you keep the cabin cool enough for the battery to be comfortable.

 

Oh yeah glendale AZ here and im 340 miles into current tank and gettin 49 mpg avg

 

In Yuma, AZ this past weekend it was 110. My milage dropped from 44mpg in Southern Calif. to 38mpg in Yuma. AC ON, all the time. 70-80mph on the freeway. My Prius does not seem to get good milage in the heat. I've only got about 3000k on the car. I hope the milage gets better than this. For all the promise of the Prius, I'm dissapointed with the reality.

I just do not understand why I can't get the 50mpg that others seem to get. My milage gets worse, not better. If it gets much worse I'm going to dump the Prius and get a small Kia. :angry: :angry:

slow down a little, you will be surprised at what it can do, also check your tires, set them to at least 38Psi.

 

Hello all! I've been reading this forum for a few weeks, but this is my first posting!

I live in the mountains of North Carolina, use my AC almost all the time, P&G when I can (but in the mnts, can't seem to do it enough), coast a lot, and try to time my stops at lights. I'm currently averaging 49 - 50 MPG. Would love to get to 55! I love my new 2007 red prius!! True love! Also, I love this forum -- thanks to everyone!

The answer is right in that quoted text. You will not get the mileage you desire driving that fast on the freeway. Driving 70mph gets me ~50mpg at the absolute best. My 58mpg tanks of late have been while doing ~60 (because the PSL is 60mph) and driving 65mph has given me consistent readings in the mid-50s mpg range. Aerodynamic drag starts to get pretty crazy above 65mph and that's where your fuel is going. I bet that Kia would get 25mpg at 80 rather than your 38-44.

What are the speed limits out there?

The speed limit is 70, BUT, on the So Cal freeeways, if you're not going 80+ you're going to get run over by the fleet of Porsche's and AMG Mercedes speeding around. I'll drop it down to 65 and see if I do better. I can see where 80mph and the AC on may impact the mpg. Thanks.

I live in Phoenix, AZ. A/C on all the time. I drive 90% highway at 75 MPH+. I have averaged 40-41 MPG for the last 3 tanks. 4,000 miles on the Prius.

 

I live in Sotheast Florida West Paln Beach 90+ every day and very bad traffic. AC is on all the time I don't think it has ever been turned off in the 8 mths we have owned the car. adv 49 mpg and just crossed the 10,000 mile mark.

 

My last tank (which lasted 26 days ) was 660 Miles/66.6 on the MFD. This is with temps mostly in the 80's with a couple of 90 degree days mixed in. I'm still not sure where people are hoping for more with the so called 5k break in period. My car sits at 3500 miles at the moment and has consistantly been getting the 60's for MPG. This is in hilly terrain with little to no highway travel. Moral of the post? Heat helps but isn't necessary for great mileage!

 

55 mpg, air temp = 105°F, just turned 11k miles.

Well. today I didn't do over 65mph and ended up getting 49.9mpg. I am much happier with this than my previous numbers. I guess speed makes a difference

It's all about speed and style of driving, you must change the way you USED to drive. It's completely different, refreshingly so.

 

I'm at 50.1 for the past month, with temps right around 100 in the LA area. I use the AC every day, and do a 90 mile rt commute. Its the best mileage I've ever got in a year and a half, and 37,000 miles.
